Homogeneous is a Latin word that means the same. These mixtures have a uniform composition throughout. Air, orange juice and blood are the examples of a homogeneous mixture.

2. Heterogeneous mixtures

Heterogeneous is a Latin word that means different. These mixtures that have non-uniform composition throughout. Concrete, soda and chocolate chip cookies are the examples of a heterogeneous mixture.

<em>Characteristics of mixtures:  </em>

The individual constituents of the mixtures have their respective chemical formula but when they are intermixed to form mixtures. It has a variable composition and has no formula. For example, the solution of table salt in water is a mixture. The chemical formula of table salt is NaCl while that of water is {{\text{H}}_2}{\text{O}}. But their mixture is formed by simple mixing of the components so it has no chemical formula.

The mixtures are formed by combining the individual components physically in different ratios and that’s why mixtures have a variable composition.

Mixtures are formed just by mixing two or more components or substances together and no chemical reaction occurs so these are not formed by any chemical reactions.

Mixtures can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous. Homogeneous are the ones that have uniform composition while heterogeneous mixtures have the non-uniform composition.

Since the mixtures are not formed by any chemical means so the constituents of the mixtures can only be separated by physical methods such as filtration, heating, drying, distillation, crystallization.

The properties of the individual particles of the mixture are retained even after the formation of mixtures. This is because these are not formed due to chemical reactions and therefore no property of any constituent is lost after the formation of mixtures.
