How does lung volume control inspiration?
Nesterboy [21]
An increase in volume DECREASES the pressure in the chest (pressure and volume vary inversely when temperature is held constant -- Boyle's law). Gas can only flow from an area of higher pressure to an area of lower pressure. It can't go uphill -- ever. It can only go from high to low pressure. When the diaphragm and intercostals contract, the diaphragm flattens and the rib cage rises. That increases the volume of the chest. That increase in volume decreases the pressure inside the chest (temperature is held constant -- because the temperature of the chest cavity does not change appreciably. It remains at body temp.). Air then flows from the area of higher pressure (atmospheric) to lower pressure (intrathoracic). That continues until the pressures are equal.

When the diaphragm and intercostals relax, the chest cavity decreases in size, the pressure increases to above atmospheric, and gas flows again from the area of higher pressure (intrathoracic) to lower pressure (atmospheric) until they are again equal.

It has nothing to do with the concentration of oxygen. You can ventilate a lung with ANY gas. It has to do with the change in pressure and only the change in pressure -- which is a function of the volume of the chest cavity.

Mitochondrial DNA accumulates DNA mutations quickly. Because of this, it would be most beneficial in analyzing the ancestral rel
konstantin123 [22]
The answer would be: A. Mitochondrial DNA is beneficial in both of these cases

Mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA is DNA that found in the mitochondrial. Mitochondrial DNA only inherited from mother, so it's relatively unchanged than nuclear DNA that mixed from father and mother.
Mitochondrial DNA has higher mutation rate in animals because it doesn't have repair mechanism like nuclear DNA. These mutations can be used as a clue for how close the relation of an organism to others.
This makes analyzing the ancestral relationship of organisms that closely or distantly related easier.

Part A Why are Northeast Pacific populations of transient and resident killer whales thought to represent different ecotypes rat
abruzzese [7]

Answer:

Transient killer whales prey on marine mammals, while resident killer whales prey on Chinook salmon

Explanation:

Remember, the term "ecotypes" is used to refer specifically to the observable differences found in the various kinds of whales, which includes their breeding populations, their language of communication, social structure, the type of food they eat, and their hunting behavior.

Thus, in the case of transient and resident killer whales in the Northeast Pacific, they are thought to represent different ecotypes rather than different species the Transient killer whales prey (feed) on marine mammals, while resident killer whales prey on Chinook salmon. Also, whales are generally thought to belong to the same species.
