Problem 9

Formula and Givens

  • f' = observed frequency                                    ?
  • f = actual frequency                                           300 Hz
  • v = velocity of sound or light waves.                343 m/s
  • vo = velocity of observer                                    25 m/s
  • vs = velocity of source.                                        50 m/s

f' = (v - vo) * f / (v + vs)

This time it really matters how the equations is set up. In point of fact the trains are moving away from each other and the observer and source are going in opposite directions. That will lower the frequency.

So you want the numerator to decrease and the denominator to increase. This will give you a minimum reading.

f' = (343 - 25) * f / (343 + 50)

f' = 318 * 300 / 393

f' = 242

Answer C

Problem 10

This problem is both instructive and very subtle. There are two shifts that take place. The first is the stationary car (vs = 0) to the moving car (vo ≠ 0) and the second is when the moving car reflects(vs ≠0) the signal back to the observer (who is not moving vo = 0)

First shift.

(v + vo)/(v + vs) = (v + s)/v You have to add the speed of the moving car to the speed of sound to get the maximum in the numerator.

Second shift

(v + vo) / (v + vs) = v/(v - s) You need to subtract the speed of the car from the speed of sound to get the maximum. The over all maximum effect happens when the two shifts are multiplied together. When that happens the single "v"s are cancelled  and you are left with

(v+s)/(v - s)  Don't forget that s is the moving speed of the car. The rest of it is straight forward. You are solving for s

f' = f * (v + s)/(v - s)                          Substitute known values

1250 = 1200 (343 + s)/(343 - s)     Divide both sides by 1200

1.04167 = (343 + s) / (343 - s)        Multiply both sides by 343 - s

1.04167 * (343 - s) = 343 + s          Remove the brackets.

357.29 - 1.04167*s = 343 + s        Subtract 343 from both sides.

14.292 - 1.04167*s = s                   Add 1.04s to both sides.

14.292 = 2.04167s                        Divide by 2.04167

14.292/2.04167 = s

s = 6.999988

which the question rounds to 6.9. The difference in answers comes from what to use for v. SQDF thinks the V was 340 which is an acceptable approximation.

Full credit goes to him for figuring out the double  shift. This is a remarkable piece of physics. Study to realize how radar works.

Why are choir concerts better in performance halls than in gymnasiums?
dlinn [17]

Constructive interference in performance halls and the elimination of echoes are reasons why choir concerts better in performance halls than in gymnasiums.

<h3>What is constructive interference?</h3>

Constructive interference is a phenomenon which occurs when two waves travelling in same direction and which are in phase add up together to produce a wave of greater amplitude.

Constructive interference occurs in performance halls while destructive interference occurs in gymnasiums.

Also in performance halls, echoes are minimized due to the padded walls and the curtains while echoes which disturb choir concerts occur in gymnasiums.

Therefore, choir concerts better in performance halls than in gymnasiums because of constructive interference in performance halls and the elimination of echoes.

The surface charge density on an infinite charged plane is −1.70 x 10^−6 C/m^2 . A proton is shot straight away from the plane a
goldfiish [28.3K]

Answer:

Acceleration of proton will be -9.197\times 10^{12}m/sec^2

Explanation:

We have given surface charge density of an infinite charged plate \sigma = -1.70\times 10^{-6}C/m^2

Electric field due to infinite sheet charge is given by E=\frac{\sigma }{2\epsilon _0}=\frac{-1.7\times 10^{-6}}{2\times 8.85\times10^{-12}}=-0.096\times 10^6=-9.6\times 10^4N/C

Charge in proton is given by e=1.6\times 10^{-19}C

So force on proton F=qE=1.6\times 10^{-19}\times -9.6\times 10^4=-15.36\times 10^{-15}N

Mass of proton m=1.67\times 10^{-27}kg

According to newtons second law force F = mass × acceleration

So -15.36\times10^{-15}=1.67\times 10^{-27}a

a=-9.197\times 10^{12}m/sec^2

PLEASE HELP ASAP!!! CORRECT ANSWER ONLY PLEASE!!!
Sedaia [141]

Blu !  The formula is right THERE, IN the question.  All you have to do is plug numbers into it.

The formula:  Kinetic Energy = 1/2 m v²

' m ' is 2,000 kg

' v ' is 22 m/s

Now pluggum in:

KE = (1/2) (2,000 kg) (22 m/s)²

KE = (1/2) (2,000 kg) (22 m/s x 22 m/s)

KE = (1/2) (2,000 kg) (484 m²/s²)

I'm <u><em>sure</em></u> you can finish it off from this point, and pick the correct choice.

A circuit has a resistance of 2.5 Ω and is powered by a 12.0 V battery.
Nadya [2.5K]

<u>Answer </u>

4.8 A

<u>Explanation </u>

From the ohm's law,

V = IR

where V is voltage, I is current and R is resistance.

I = V/R

  = 12.0/2.5

  = 4.8 A
