Show that for any real number x ≥ 0 the set (x,x + 1]∩N is a singleton set

Answer: First, a singleton set is the set with only one element, for example, the set {∅} or set "null" is a singleton.

now, X ≥ 0, and X ∈ R.

(x,x + 1]∩N is the intersection between the set x and x+1 with the set of natural numbers, so the result of this operation is the set of all the natural numbers between x and x+1.

if x is a rational (or irrational) number, such as 1.5, then x +1 = 2.5

in (1.5, 2.5] there is only one natural element, the 2, then (x,x + 1]∩N is the singleton {2}

if x is a positive integer number, such as 1, then x + 1 = 2

the set is (1,2] is important to notice that 1 ∉ (1,2] because the set is open in the lower limit. so this set only contains one natural number, the 2; so again; the intersection with the natural set is a singleton

So this is proven for x rational, irrational and integers.

This happens because each element in the natural set is separated by the next one by 1, and in the set (x,x + 1]  although the distance between the lower and upper limits is 1, the set is open in the lower limit, so the distance is < 1. then you never can have two natural numbers on this set.

A piggy bank contains pennies, nickels, and dimes. The number of dimes is 15 more than the number of nickels, and there are 140
amm1812

Answer:

Option D is correct.

There are 34 nickels in the piggy bank.

Step-by-step explanation:

A piggy bank contains pennies, nickels and dimes.

Let the number of pennies be p

Let the number of nickels be n

Let the number of dimes be d

Also, note that 1 penny = $0.01

1 nickel = $0.05

1 dime = $0.10

- The number of dimes is 15 more than the number of nickels.

d = 15 + n

- There are 140 coins altogether totaling $7.17.

p + n + d = 140

0.01p + 0.05n + 0.1d = 7.17

Bringing the 3 equations together

d = 15 + n (eqn 1)

p + n + d = 140 (eqn 2)

0.01p + 0.05n + 0.1d = 7.17 (eqn 3)

Substitute (eqn 1) into (eqn 2)

p + n + d = 140

p + n + (15 + n) = 140

p + 2n + 15 = 140

p = 140 - 15 - 2n = 125 - 2n

p = 125 - 2n (eqn 4)

Substitute (eqn 1) and (eqn 4) into (eqn 3)

0.01p + 0.05n + 0.1d = 7.17

0.01(125 - 2n) + 0.05n + 0.1(15 + n) = 71.7

1.25 - 0.02n + 0.05n + 1.5 + 0.1n = 7.17

0.1n + 0.05n - 0.02n + 1.5 + 1.25 = 7.17

0.13n + 2.75 = 7.17

0.13n = 7.17 - 2.75 = 4.42

0.13n = 4.42

n = (4.42/0.13) = 34

d = 15 + n = 15 + 34 = 49

p = 125 -2n = 125 - (2×34) = 125 - 68 = 57

Hence, there are 57 pennies, 34 nickels and 49 dimes in the piggy bank.

Hope this Helps!!!

Which is true about the degree of the sum and difference of the polynomials 3x5y – 2x3y4 – 7xy3 and –8x5y 2x3y4 xy3?.
ki77a [65]

The degree of the sum and difference of the polynomials are 6 and 7 respectively.

given polynomials are:

3x^5-2x^3y^4-7xy^3

-8x^5y+2x^3y^4+xy^3

the sum of polynomials = -5x^5y-6xy^3

the difference of polynomials = 11x^5y-4x^3y^4-8xy^3

<h3>what is the degree of a polynomial?</h3>

A polynomial's degree is the highest or the greatest power of a variable in a polynomial equation.

degree of sum = monomial with highest power = 5+1=6

degree of difference = monomial with highest power = 3+4 = 7

therefore, the degree of the sum and difference of the polynomials are 6 and 7 respectively.

I already know the answer to this problem, I want a explanation on how to get the answer.
DochEvi [55]

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow BC=CE

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow 3x+3y=7x+5y

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow 7x-3x=3y-5y

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow 4x=-2y

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow 2x=-y

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow \dfrac{x}{y}=\dfrac{-1}{2}

Now

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow BE=BC+CE+CD

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow BE=3x+3y+7x+5y+5x-2y+6

\\ \bull\tt\dashrightarrow BE=15x+6y+6
