Many people think that a national lobby's successful fight against gun control legislation is reflecting the will of a minority

of Americans. A random sample of 4000 citizens yielded 2250 who are in favor of gun control legislation. Estimate the true proportion of all Americans who are in favor of gun control legislation using a 95% confidence interval

Answer:

The 95% confidence interval of  the true proportion of all Americans who are in favor of gun control legislation is (0.5471, 0.5779).

Step-by-step explanation:

In a sample with a number n of people surveyed with a probability of a success of \pi, and a confidence interval 1-\alpha, we have the following confidence interval of proportions.

\pi \pm z\sqrt{\frac{\pi(1-\pi)}{n}}

In which

z is the zscore that has a pvalue of 1 - \frac{\alpha}{2}.

For this problem, we have that:

A random sample of 4000 citizens yielded 2250 who are in favor of gun control legislation. This means that n = 4000 and \pi = \frac{2250}{4000} = 0.5625

Estimate the true proportion of all Americans who are in favor of gun control legislation using a 95% confidence interval

So \alpha = 0.05, z is the value of Z that has a pvalue of 1 - \frac{0.05}{2} = 0.975, so z = 1.96.

The lower limit of this interval is:

\pi - z\sqrt{\frac{\pi(1-\pi)}{n}} = 0.5625 - 1.96\sqrt{\frac{0.5625*0.4375}{4000}} = 0.5471

The upper limit of this interval is:

\pi + z\sqrt{\frac{\pi(1-\pi)}{n}} = 0.5625 + 1.96\sqrt{\frac{0.5625*0.4375}{4000}} = 0.5779

The 95% confidence interval of  the true proportion of all Americans who are in favor of gun control legislation is (0.5471, 0.5779).

Find the x-intercepts of the parabola with vertex (1,1) and y-intercept (0,-3). Write your answer in this form (x of 1 , y of 1)
Vikki [24]
Remember that the vertex form of a parabola or quadratic equation is:

y=a(x-h)^2+k, where (h,k) is the "vertex" which is the maximum or minimum point of the parabola  (and a is half the acceleration of the of the function, but that is maybe too much :P)

In this case we are given that the vertex is (1,1) so we have:

y=a(x-1)^2+1, and then we are told that there is a point (0,-3) so we can say:

-3=a(0-1)^2+1

-3=a+1

-4=a so our complete equation in vertex form is:

y=-4(x-1)^2+1

Now you wish to know where the x-intercepts are.  x-intercepts are when the graph touches the x-axis, ie, when y=0 so

0=-4(x-1)^2+1  add 4(x-1)^2 to both sides

4(x-1)^2=1  divide both sides by 4

(x-1)^2=1/4  take the square root of both sides

x-1=±√(1/4)  which is equal to

x-1=±1/2  add 1 to both sides

x=1±1/2

So x=0.5 and 1.5, thus the x-intercept points are:

(0.5, 0) and (1.5, 0)  or if you like fractions:

(1/2, 0) and (3/2, 0) :P

10p-2(3p-6)=4(3p-6)-8p
lisabon 2012 [21]

Answer:

undefined / no solution

Step-by-step explanation:

10p - 2(3p-6) = 4(3p-6) - 8p

10p - 6p - 12 = 12p - 24 - 8p

4p - 12 = 4p - 24

0 = -12

0 cannot equal -12
