N2 = 588.95 mm Hg

O2 = 158.36 mm Hg

Ar = 6.787 mm Hg

Explanation:

Their percentage represents their mole fraction.

N2= 78.1% = 0.781

O2 = 21.0% = 0.21

Ar = 0.9% = 0.009

Barometric pressure is 754.1 mm Hg

Partial pressure for each will be,

For N2 = 0.781 x 754.1 = 588.95 mm Hg

For O2 = 0.21 x 754.1 = 158.36 mm Hg

For Ar = 0.009 x 754.1 = 6.787 mm Hg

The oxidation number of the reactants is zero, because they are pure elements.

The P in compounds may have oxidation states 3- or 5-. Gallium may only have oxidation state 3+.

Then, to be neutral in GaP the oxidation states are 3+ for Ga and 3- for P.

And the transference of electrons can be see in this oxidation - reduction equations:

Ga (0) - 3 e-    ----> Ga (3+)

P (0) + 3e- ---> P (3-)

So, for one formula unit, 3 electrons have been transfered from each Ga atom to P atom to form one GaP unit.

Answer: 3 electrons.

Explanation:  The periodic table was arranged by Dmitri Mendeleev specifically  around similarites in their chemical behaviors.  He found that as atomic number increases, at some point an element starts to react in a manner similar to a previous one.  When that happened, he would place the larger element under the smaller one, and eventually noticed a periodicity in the table.  Elements in a column (Groups) had similiar chemical properties.  We know today that these similarities are due to the electron configuration, and that these configurations repeat themselves.  He left gaps in the table when he could find an existing element with properties similar to others in that group.  I big leap of faith, but it worked.  Elements for those missing boxes were eventually discovered.
