The cells of the red marrow are responsible for producing blood. Within trabeculae  lie lacunae which contain osteocytes.<span> Blood vessels from the periosteum penetrate through to the spongy bone,  and osteocytes in the trabeculae are nourished directly from the blood circulating through the marrow cavities.</span>

This whale-fall provides nutrients for a whale-fall community, which includes bacteria, crabs, worms and other invertebrates. Organic fragments from the whale-fall enrich the sediments nearby. Enrichment opportunists colonize the whalebone and surrounding sediment in order to feed on these organic fragments.</span>
