Antidiarrheals are drugs which are given to treat acute diarrhea by providing symptomatic relief for diarrhea but do not eliminate the cause of the diarrhea.The most common drug used is Loperamide (Imodium) which is an opioid receptor agonist. Loperamide decreases the flow of fluids and electrolytes in the bowel and reduces bowel movement by acting on the mu opioid receptors in the myenteric plexus of the large intestine.
