3) In the Hydrolysis of Disaccharides and Polysaccharides portion of the lab, starch should give one positive iodine test and on
AfilCa [17]

Answer: potassium iodide is the basic test for starch, and the positive test is blue-black coloration, any other test substance which is not starch will give a negative results.

Explanation:

Starch is an example of polysaccharide and since the standard test for it is potassium iodide solution, it gives a positive test.

Diasaccharides e.g maltose are reducing sugars.their standard test is BENEDICT test .

Therefore, in the hydrolysis; starch should give a positve test, while Diasaccharides should give negative rest.

When would formation of a derivative be a necessary step in this experiment?
const2013 [10]
The formation of a derivative being a necessary step in the experiment lies in the importance of the derived structure. Often the derived product confers to reaction pathways which uses less reactive starting materials and more easily proceeds to completion. This also allows us to take a small amount of sample. The derived product at times is a general compound allowing its easy analysis. Often we encounter a product but we find it difficult to analyse it in ways we want. Here lies the essence of forming a derivative which often are simpler compounds allowing easier analysis yet having similar functional groups and structural properties. Also sometimes we encounter problems when our desired product is unstable and forms stable degraded products. But if we somehow manage to synthesize a derivative it may be relatively stable and form no degradation products. It would be stable at least for a significant period of time making it easier to study its properties. The derived product also at times are synthesized using general reaction pathways facilitating a way of easier synthesis and helping it to correlate with other similar reaction pathways and products. So the above paragraph accounts for the need of derivatives. When we encounter problems similar to those mentioned above it becomes necessary for a researcher to form rather synthesize a derivative.

A solution is made by dissolving 3.35 g of fructose in 35.0 ml of water. What is the molality of fructose in the solution? Assum
ludmilkaskok [199]

Answer:

m = 0.531 molal

Explanation:

∴ m fructose = 3.35 g

∴ V water = 35.0 mL

∴ ρ H2O = 1 g/mL

 • molality = moles solute / Kg solvent

∴ Mw fructose = 180.16 g/mol

⇒ moles fructose = 3.35 g * ( mol / 180.16 g) = 0.0186 mol fructose

⇒ m H2O = 35.0 mL * ( 1 g/mL ) * ( Kg/1000g) = 0.035 Kg H2O

⇒ molality (m) = 0.0186 mol fructose / 0.035 Kg H2O

⇒ m = 0.531 molal
