Here is the full question

Concrete can be pre-stressed in structural applications using steel wires stretched in tension prior to the curing of the concrete and upon curing, the tension can be released, compressing the concrete. If steel wires comprising 40% of the composite volume are pulled with 500kN of force and then released once the concrete has cured. What is the amount of force transferred to the concrete?

(moduli of concrete and wires are 50 and 100 GPa respectively.)

Answer:

375 kN

Explanation:

Given that:

A steel wire A_s = 40 % ; if we consider the width of the steel to be =40%;

Then , the concrete A_c = 60%

Load (P) = 500 kN

Moduli of concrete E_c = 50 GPa

Moduli of steel wire E_s = 100 GPa

A_T = A_s + A_c

(\frac{stress}{strain})_s = 100 \ GPa

\frac{500*1000N/Ast}{Strain_s} =100 GPa

Strain_s = \frac{500*1000\ N\ mm^2}{100*10^9\ N \ A_st }

Strain_s = \frac{5*10^{-6}}{0.4A_t}

Strain_s = \frac{1.25*10^{-5}}{A_t}

Since;

Strain_{steel} = Strain_ {concrete}

Then:

\frac{1.25*10^{-5}}{A_t} = \frac {Stress_s}{E_c}

Stress in the concrete = \frac{1.25*10^{-5}*E_c}{A_t}

Stress in the concrete = \frac{1.25*10^{-5}* 50*10^9}{A_t}

Stress in the concrete = \frac{625 \ kN}{A_t}

However,0.6 A_t = A_c

∴ Force transferred to  the concrete = \frac{625 \ kN}{A_t} * \ 0.6 \ A_t

Force  transferred to the concrete = 375 kN

A metal sign for a car dealership is a thin, uniform right triangle with base length b and height h. the sign has mass m.
Nesterboy [21]

(a) The moment of inertia of the sign for rotation about the side of length h is 1.24 kgm².

(b) The kinetic energy of the sign when it is rotating about an axis is 141.37 J.

<h3>Moment of inertia of the triangular sign</h3>

The moment of inertia of the sign for rotation about the side of length h is calculated as follows;

I = 2 x ¹/₃M(b/2)²

I = 2 x ¹/₃Mb² x ¹/₄

I = ¹/₆Mb²

I = ¹/₆ x 4.4 x 1.3²

I = 1.24 kgm²

<h3>Rotational kinetic energy of the ball</h3>

K.E(rot) = ¹/₂Iω²

where;

  • ω is angular speed = 2.4 rev/s = 2.4 x (2π rad)/s = 15.1 rad/s

K.E(rot) = ¹/₂(1.24)(15.1)²

K.E(rot) = 141.37 J

A chief finds a glittering stone which he shows to the family. The family assures him that the stone is pure gold but he doubts.
Nina [5.8K]

I will tell the Chief about the high worth of the Gold and the various

substances it can be used to produce.

<h3>What is Gold?</h3>

Gold is a naturally occurring element with a bright, slightly orange yellow

color. It has a high value and can be used in the production of various

substances such as:

  • Jewelries
  • Medals and awards
  • Arts etc.

The Chief should however be told about the high worth value of Gold and

the various things it can be used for so he can make a decision.

Which lists imaging techniques that use wave behaviors in order of increased risk of cancer from least risk to greatest
Cerrena [4.2K]

Imaging techniques that use wave behaviors are -

  • sonography
  • X-ray radiography
  • CT scan
<h3>How can mechanical waves help in the treatment of cancer?</h3>

Ultrasound is used to improve absorption of a radioactive pellet by a tumor. The radioisotope in a radiopharmaceutical releases sound waves into surrounding cells. Beams of X-rays are targeted at a cancerous tumor from outside the body.

<h3>How can mechanical waves help the treatment of cancer?</h3>

HIFU is a cancer treatment that uses high-frequency sound waves. You have HIFU from a machine. The machine gives off the sound waves which deliver a strong beam to a specific part of a cancer. This heats and destroys the cancer cells.

HIFU can treat a single tumour or part of a large tumour. But it is not suitable for people with cancer that has spread to more than one place in their body.
