This device consists of container which is used to collect the rainfall. The amount of rainfall is measured in terms of height of the rainfall water captured in a container per  unit area in a particular time frame. The collected water is expressed in terms of millimeters. It is also called as udometer, ombrometer and pluviometer. The instrument is used by the meteorologists and hydrologists to obtain and measure the rainfall over a set period of time.
