An aircraft component is fabricated from an aluminum alloy that has a plane strain fracture toughness of 30 . It has been determ

ined that fracture results at a stress of 237 MPa when the maximum (or critical) internal crack length is 2.78 mm. a) Determine the value of for this same component and alloy at a stress level of 355 MPa when the maximum internal crack length is 1.39 mm.

Answer:

fracture will occur since ( 31.8 Mpa√m ) is greater than the K_{Ic of the material ( 30 Mpa√m )

Explanation:

Given the data in the question;

To determine whether the aircraft component will fracture, given a fracture toughness of 30 Mpa√m, stress level of 355 and maximum internal crack length of 1.39 mm.

On a similar component, it has been said that fracture results at a stress of 237 MPa when the maximum (or critical) internal crack length is 2.78 mm.

so we first of all solve for the parameter Y in the condition where fracture occurred.

K_{Ic = 30 Mpa√m

σ = 237 MPa

2α = 2.78 mm = 2.78 × 10⁻³ m

so

Y = K_{Ic / σ√πα

we substitute

Y = (30 Mpa√m) / (237 MPa)√(π(2.78 × 10⁻³ m / 2 ) )

Y =  (30 Mpa) / (237)( 0.06608187 )

Y = 30 / 15.6614

Y = 1.9155

Next we solve for Yσ√πα for the second case;

σ = 355 Mpa, 2α = 1.39 mm = 1.39 × 10⁻³ m

so

Yσ√πα = 1.9155 × 355 Mpa × √( π × (1.39 × 10⁻³ m / 2) )

= 1.9155 × 355 × 0.0467269

= 31.8 Mpa√m

so

( 31.8 Mpa√m ) > K_{Ic ( 30 Mpa√m )

Therefore, fracture will occur since ( 31.8 Mpa√m ) is greater than the K_{Ic of the material ( 30 Mpa√m )

Explain the two advantages and the two disadvantages of fission as an energy source.
yawa3891 [41]

Answer with Explanation:

1) The advantages of fission energy are:

a) Higher concentration of energy : Concentration of energy or the energy density is defined as the amount of energy that is produced by burning a unit mass of the fuel. The nuclear energy obtained by fission has the highest energy density among all the other natural sources of energy such as coal,gas,e.t.c.

b) Cheap source of energy : The cost at which the energy is produced by a nuclear reactor after it is operational is the lowest among all the other sources of energy such as coal, solar,e.t.c

2) The disadvantages of fission energy are:

a) Highly dangerous residue: The fuel that is left unspent is highly radioactive and thus is very dangerous. Usually the residual material is taken deep into the earth for it's disposal.

b) It has high initial costs of design and development: The cost to design a nuclear reactor and to built one after it is designed is the most among all other types of energy sources and requires highly skilled personnel for operation.

A 24-tooth gear has AGMA standard full-depth involute teeth with diametral pitch of 12. Calculate the pitch diameter, circular p
torisob [31]

Answer:

Explanation:

Given:

Tooth Number, N = 24

Diametral pitch pd = 12

pitch diameter, d = N/pd = 24/12 = 2in

circular pitch, pc = π/pd  = 3.142/12 = 0.2618in

Addendum, a  = 1/pd = 1/12 =0.08333in

Dedendum, b = 1.25/pd = 0.10417in

Tooth thickness, t = 0.5pc = 0,5 * 0.2618  = 0.1309in

Clearance, c = 0.25/pd = 0.25/12 = 0.02083in

Air at a pressure of 6000 N/m^2 and a temperature of 300C flows with a velocity of 10 m/sec over a flat plate of length 0.5 m. E
White raven [17]

Answer:

Q=hA(T_{w}-T_{inf})=16.97*0.5(27-300)=-2316.4J

Explanation:

To solve this problem we use the expression for the temperature film

T_{f}=\frac{T_{\inf}+T_{w}}{2}=\frac{300+27}{2}=163.5

Then, we have to compute the Reynolds number

Re=\frac{uL}{v}=\frac{10\frac{m}{s}*0.5m}{16.96*10^{-6}\rfac{m^{2}}{s}}=2.94*10^{5}

Re<5*10^{5}, hence, this case if about a laminar flow.

Then, we compute the Nusselt number

Nu_{x}=0.332(Re)^{\frac{1}{2}}(Pr)^{\frac{1}{3}}=0.332(2.94*10^{5})^{\frac{1}{2}}(0.699)^{\frac{1}{3}}=159.77

but we also now that

Nu_{x}=\frac{h_{x}L}{k}\\h_{x}=\frac{Nu_{x}k}{L}=\frac{159.77*26.56*10^{-3}}{0.5}=8.48\\

but the average heat transfer coefficient is h=2hx

h=2(8.48)=16.97W/m^{2}K

Finally we have that the heat transfer is

Q=hA(T_{w}-T_{inf})=16.97*0.5(27-300)=-2316.4J

In this solution we took values for water properties of

v=16.96*10^{-6}m^{2}s

Pr=0.699

k=26.56*10^{-3}W/mK

A=1*0.5m^{2}

I hope this is useful for you

2. What is the original length of the rectangular bar if the deformation is 0.005 in with a force of 1000 lbs and an area of 0.7
Ugo [173]

Answer:

18.75in

Explanation:

Modulus of elasticity = Stress/Strain

Since stress = Force/Area

Given

Force = 1000lb

Area = 0.75sqin

Stress = 1000/0.75

Stress = 1333.33lbsqin

Strain

Strain = Stress/Modulus of elasticity

Strain = 1333.33/5,000,000

Strain = 0.0002667

Also

Strain = extension/original length

extension = 0.005in

Original length = extension/strain

Original length = 0.005/0.0002667

Original length = 18.75in

Hence the original length of the rectangular bar is 18.75in
