Consider a room that is initially at the outdoor temperature of 208C. The room contains a 40-W lightbulb, a 110-W TV set, a 300-

W refrigerator, and a 1200-W iron. Assuming no heat transfer through the walls, determine the rate of increase of the energy content of the room when all of these electric devices are on.

Answer:

The rate of increase of the energy content of the room when all the eletrical devices are on is 1650 W.

Explanation:

From conservation of energy,

Rate of energy transfer (\dfrac{dE}{dt}) = Rate of change of energy within the room (E_{in} - E_{out}).

As according to the problem no heat transfer occurs through the walls of the room we can assume that there is no energy transferred to the outside of the room, i.e., E_{out} = 0.

If all the electric devices are on inside the room, then the rate of increase of energy is equal to the power (P_{in}) consumed bt the electrical devices inside the room. Therefore we can write,

\dfrac{dE}{dt} = \dfrac{dE_{in}}{dt} = P_{in} = P_{bulb} + P_{TV} + P_{refrigerator} + P_{iron} = (40 + 110 + 300 + 1200)~W = 1650~W

Explanation:

You are camping in the breathtaking mountains if Colorado. You spy an unopened diet soda can floating motionless below the surface of a lake. What is the direction and amount of force the water exerts on it?

A. Zero

B. Down, equal to the can's weight

C. Up, equal to the can's weight

D. Not enough information is given

from the principle of flotation which states that a

When a body displaces a weight of water equal to its own weight, it floats. : A floating object displaces a weight of fluid equal to its own weight. ... Archimedes' principle equates the buoyant force to the weight of the fluid displaced.

the upthrust (this is the upward vertical force exerted on an object in fluid)in the water equals the weight of the body in water it floats.

Two life preservers have identical volumes, but one is filled with Styrofoam while the other is filled with sand. When the two l
soldier1979 [14.2K]

Answer:

Sand

Explanation:

While the term buoyancy may confuse the reader, the question here is referring to buoyant force.

Buoyant force is the amount of pressure exerted on an object by the liquid it is in. Given by the formula

F_{b} = V_{o} D_{l} g

Where

F_{b} = Buoyant Force

V_{o} = Volume of Object submerged in the liquid

D_{l} = Density of Liquid

g = Force of gravity

Since in this question the swimmer with the sand is completely submerged in water, more of the volume of his preserver is under the water hence the buoyant force is greater on it than the swimmer with the Styrofoam (as part of him is not submerged in water)
