A block of mass 4 kilograms is initially moving at 5m/s on a horizontal surface. There is friction between the block and the sur

face which causes the block to come to a complete stop. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 0.5.
Calculate the distance the block slides while coming to a stop. Show all work.

• Net vertical force on the block:

∑ <em>F</em> = <em>n</em> - <em>w</em> = 0

(<em>n</em> = magnitude of normal force, <em>w</em> = weight)

<em>n</em> = <em>w</em> = <em>m g</em>

(<em>m</em> = mass, <em>g</em> = 9.8 m/s²)

<em>n</em> = (4 kg) (9.8 m/s²) = 39.2 N

• Net horizontal force:

∑ <em>F</em> = -<em>f</em> = <em>m a</em>

(<em>f</em> = mag. of friction, <em>a</em> = acceleration)

We have <em>f</em> = <em>µ</em> <em>n</em> = 0.5 (39.2 N) = 19.6 N, so

-19.6 N = (4 kg) <em>a</em>

<em>a</em> = -4.9 m/s²

With this acceleration, the block comes to a rest from an initial speed of 5 m/s, so that it travels a distance ∆<em>x</em> in this time such that

0² - (5 m/s)² = 2 (-4.9 m/s²) ∆<em>x</em>

∆<em>x</em> = (25 m²/s²) / (9.8 m/s²) ≈ 2.55 m ≈ 2.6 m

A ball with an initial velocity of 8.00 m/s rolls up a hill without slipping. (a) Treating the ball as a spherical shell, calcul
GrogVix [38]

Answer:

Part i)

h = 5.44 m

Part ii)

h = 3.16 m

Explanation:

Part i)

Since the ball is rolling so its total kinetic energy in this case will convert into gravitational potential energy

So we have

\frac{1}{2}mv^2 + \frac{1}{2}I\omega^2 = mgh

here we know that for spherical shell and pure rolling conditions

v = R \omega

I = \frac{2}{3}mR^2

\frac{1}{2}mv^2 + \frac{1}{2}(\frac{2}{3}mR^2)(\frac{v^2}{R^2}) = mgh

\frac{5}{6}mv^2 = mgh

h = \frac{5v^2}{6g}

h = \frac{5(8^2)}{6(9.81)} = 5.44 m

Part b)

If ball is not rolling and just sliding over the hill then in that case

\frac{1}{2}mv^2 = mgh

h = \frac{v^2}{2g}

h = \frac{8^2}{2(9.81)} = 3.16 m

A force of 2N will stretch a rubber band 0.02m. Assuming that Hooke's Law applies, answer the following: How far will a 1600N fo
denis-greek [22]
Hooke's Law states that the extension is directly proportional to the force applied so:
F/x = constant

F₁/x₁ = F₂/x₂
2 / 0.02 = 1600 / x₂
x₂ = 16 m

Elastic work = 1/2 Fx
= 1/2 * 1600 * 16
= 12.8 kJ

How does The centripetal fotce change if the car has less Mass?
vaieri [72.5K]

Answer:

The centripetal force acting on the car is proportional to the mass of the car.

Explanation:

Let,

The mass of the car be 'm'

The velocity of the car moving in the curved path be 'v'

The radius of the curved path be 'r'

According to physics, a body moving ion circular path experience a force directed along the radius of the path. This force is called centripetal force.

The formula for centripetal force is,

                                   <em>F = mv²/r</em>

Where,

                                      a = v²/r

So, if the mass of the car changes, the centripetal force also changes proportionally according to the above equation.
