Why is K lighter than Na

Chemistry

Answer:

Basically, in the case of sodium and potassium the increase in shell size outweighs the pull of the core on the outer shell electron and so potassium is less dense than sodium. When we more from Na to K, effect of increase in volume is more pronounced as compared to effect of increase in atomic mass.

Which of the following would you predict to have a positive value for º ?
alexdok [17]
Given:

AgCl (s) ===> Ag+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)
- negative entropy

H2O(g) ===> H2O(l)
- positive entropy

2Na (s) + Cl2 (g) ===> 2NaCl (s)
- positive entropy

Br2(l) ===> Br2 (s)
-positive entropy

They are identified to have positive or negative values of entropy based on the phases of the reactants and products.

12. If the total pressure exerted by 3 gases is 45 atm and each individual gas has the
Bumek [7]

Answer:

Partial pressure for each of the three gases, in the mixture is 15 atm

Explanation:

Remember that the total pressure of a mixture, is the sum of partial pressures from the gases contained in the mixture.

Our total pressure = 45 atm

The 3 gases have the same pressure, so we can propose this equation:

3x = 45 atm

where x is the partial pressure for each of the three gases.

x = 45/3 → 15 atm

Place the following compounds in order of increasing strength of intermolecular forces. CH4 CH3CH2CH3 CH3CH3 Group of answer cho
arsen [322]

Answer:

CH4 < CH3CH3 < CH3CH2CH3

Explanation:

Alkanes are saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons that undergoes intermolecular Van der waals forces. Van der waals forces are the attractive forces which make it possible for non-polar molecules to form liquids and solids.

Van der waals force are described as intermolecular forces arising from induced fluctuating dipoles in atoms and molecules brought about by movement of electrons around the atomic nucleus.

An example of the Van der waals force is the  london dispersion force that occurs in the alkane family. It is the weakest of all electrical forces that act between atoms and molecules, These forces are responsible for liquefaction or solidification of non-polar substances at low temperature.

The strength of the intermolecular forces is based on the number of electrons surrounding the molecule and the surface area of the molecule. SO, in alkanes, the longer the carbon chain, the more stronger the intermolecular forces.
