He was not a muslim at the begining he was bad to the muslims but before the hijra (Migration) With hamza (RA). Umar was realated to prophet muhammad because his sister hafsah married Muhammad (SAW).

And his other sister married the famous companion said ibn zayd.

He was the best companion after abu bakr (RA).
