1. Towards the end of a 400m race, Faisal and Edward are leading and are both running at 6m/s. While Faisal is 72m from the fini

sh line Edward is 100m from the finish line. Realising this and to beat Faisal, Edward decides to accelerate uniformly at 0.2 m/s2 until the end of the race while Faisal keeps on the same constant speed. Does Edward succeed in beating Faisal?

Answer:

  no

Explanation:

Faisal will finish the race in ...

  (72 m)/(6 m/s) = 12 s

In order to beat Faisal, Edward's average speed in those 12 seconds must exceed ...

  (100 m)/(12 s) = 8 1/3 m/s

To achieve that average speed, Edward's acceleration must be ...

  (8 1/3 m/s -6 m/s)/(12 s/2) = 7/18 m/s² ≈ 0.3889 m/s²

Accelerating at only 0.2 m/s², Edward will not beat Faisal.

_____

<em>Additional comment</em>

When acceleration is uniform, the average speed is reached halfway through the period of acceleration.

You hang a heavy ball with a mass of 10 kg from a gold wire 2.6 m long that is 1.6 mm in diameter. You measure the stretch of th
PolarNik [594]

<u>Answer:</u> The Young's modulus for the wire is 6.378\times 10^{10}N/m^2

<u>Explanation:</u>

Young's Modulus is defined as the ratio of stress acting on a substance to the amount of strain produced.

The equation representing Young's Modulus is:

Y=\frac{F/A}{\Delta l/l}=\frac{Fl}{A\Delta l}

where,

Y = Young's Modulus

F = force exerted by the weight  = m\times g

m = mass of the ball = 10 kg

g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.81m/s^2

l = length of wire  = 2.6 m

A = area of cross section  = \pi r^2

r = radius of the wire = \frac{d}{2}=\frac{1.6mm}{2}=0.8mm=8\times 10^{-4}m      (Conversion factor:  1 m = 1000 mm)

\Delta l = change in length  = 1.99 mm = 1.99\times 10^{-3}m

Putting values in above equation, we get:

Y=\frac{10\times 9.81\times 2.6}{(3.14\times (8\times 10^{-4})^2)\times 1.99\times 10^{-3}}\\\\Y=6.378\times 10^{10}N/m^2

Hence, the Young's modulus for the wire is 6.378\times 10^{10}N/m^2

What should a free-body diagram look like for a skydiver that is still speeding up as he falls?
MrRissso [65]
<span>When you draw a free body diagram, you draw longer arrows
for stronger forces, and shorter arrows for weaker ones.

If the skydiver's falling speed is still increasing, you can tell that
the downward force of gravity acting on him is still greater than the
upward force of air resistance.

So on the diagram, there is a shorter arrow up for air resistance
and a longer arrow down for gravity.  (Choice #3)</span>
