How much heat is evolved in converting 1.00 mol of steam at 155.0 ∘c to ice at -50.0 ∘c? the heat capacity of steam is 2.01 j/(g
Ne4ueva [31]
When the specific heat capacity of the water is 4.18 J/g.°C so, we are going to use this formula to get the heat for cooling three  phases changes from steam to liquid and from liquid to ice (solid) :

when Q = M*C*ΔT

Q is the heat in J

and M is the mass in gram = 1 mol H2O * 18 g/mol(molar mass) = 18 g

C is the specific heat J/g.°C

ΔT is the change in temperature

Q = Mw *[ ( Csteam * ΔTsteam)+(Cw*ΔTw) + (Cice  * ΔT ice)]

    = 18 g * [(2.01 * (155-100°C)) + (4.18 * (100-0°C)) + (2.09 * (0 - 55 °C))]

∴Q = 7444.8 J

and when we know that the heat of fusion for water = 334J/g

and heat of vaporization for water =  2260J/g

∴Q for the two phases changes = M * (2260+334)

                                                      = 18 * (2260+334)

                                                      = 46692 J

∴ Q total = 7444.8 + 46692 = 54136.8 J

A very old tree limb contains an amount of carbon-14 that is approximately 1/8 of the current atmospheric 14C levels.. Calculate
Tomtit [17]

A.       The radioactive decay equation is N = N0e^{-ln(2)*t/T }

where T is the half-life (5730 years), N0 is the number of atoms at time t = 0 and N is the number at time t.

Rewriting this as:

(N/N0) = e^{-ln(2)*t/T }

Since N = (1/8) N0 and substituting known values:

1/8 = e^{-ln(2)*t/5730}

Taking ln of both sides:

ln(1/8)= -ln(2)*t/5730

t = - 5730 * ln(1/8) / ln (2)

t = 17,190 years

The tree was cut down 17,190 years ago.

B.   N0 = 1,500,000 carbon-14 atoms

Since N = (1/8) N0

N = 187,500 carbon atoms left

How was nitrogen discovered
Solnce55 [7]
In 1770 a Scottish physician and Chemist Daniel Rutherford performed a simple experiment with which he discovered nitrogen. Rutherford being with an empty bottle that he turned upside down in a pan of water so that the air was trapped. A buring candle was placed inside the bottle with the trapped air causing the water to rise a bit. The part of the air that seemed to "disappear" when the candle was bured was oxygen gas and the part of the air that did not "disappear" Ruthford discovered Nitrogen.
