Spiral fracture of bone: Spiral fracture of bone occurs due to twisting of the limb, and is a very common skiing accident. The f

racture plane is helical, and is very difficult to heal. Mechanically, it occurs due to an applied torsion load on the bone. Recall that a state of pure shear occurs within the material when torsion is applied on a cylinder, and the bone can be idealized as a cylinder. Let a femur bone be subjected to a torque of T 50 N-m. Assume body weight of the person to be W- 80 Kgs, while each leg is subjected to half of that weight. Given radius of the bone r 10 mm. Compute the principal stresses and shear stresses, as well as orientation of planes on which these stresses are realized.

Answer:

principal stresses :б1 = 32.62mPa б2 = 31.38mPa

Max Shear stress : 16.31 mPa

Orientation of max principle plane = 44.43°

Orientation of minimum principal plane = 134.43°

Explanation:

Given data:

Torque = 50 N-m

weight = 80 kgs

half of weight is subjected to each leg

radius of bone = 10 mm = 0.010 m

a) Determine the principal stresses and shear stress

first calculate the max shear stress ( this will occur in the outermost element

= 16T / π*d^3 where : T = 50 , d = 0.020 m

hence max shear stress = 32 mPa

next determine compressive stress

= ( 40*g) / π/4*d^2 . where : d = 0.020 m , g = 9.81

hence compressive stress = 1.24 mPa

draw and calculate the radius of Mohr's circle

radius of Mohr's circle = 32.0060

Hence principal stresses = 32.0060 ± 0.62

б1 = 32.62mPa

б2 = 31.38mPa

attached below is the remaining part of the solution

A 0.150 kg baseball has 118 j of KE. how fast is the ball moving?(unit=m/s)
MrRissso [65]

Answer:

Explanation 118 = (1/2) * 0.15 * v² 118 = 0.075 * v² v² = 1573.33 m/s ... since KE = m/2*V^2 , then : V = √2KE/m = √20*118/1.5 = 39.67 m//sec ( 142.8 km/h ; 88.75 mph).:

A wrench is accidentally dropped at the top of an elevator shaft in a tall building. (a) How many meters does the wrench fall in
RUDIKE [14]

Answer:

11.25m

Explanation:

s = ut + \frac{1}{2} a {t}^{2} \\ = 0 \times 1.5 + \frac{1}{2} \times 10 \times {1.5}^{2} \\ = 5 \times 2.25 \\ = 11.25

What is the area of a circle of a radius 4.1×10^4 cm
dmitriy555 [2]

Answer:

128805.2988 cm squared or 128000 to 3 significant figures.

Explanation:

Area of a circle : pi times radius squared or r^{2} \pi

pi times 4.1×10^4 cm = 41000 pi or 128805.2988

Answer

123.5 x 10 ^-3 radian

Explanation:

Given the Width of slit a = 1 x 10⁻³ / 200

a = 5x 10⁻⁶ m .

angle at which first order peak is formed

= λ / a (where λ is wavelength and a is width of slit)

given λ = 617.3 x 10⁻⁹ m

a = 5 x 10⁻⁶

θ = 617.3 x 10⁻⁹ / 5 x 10⁻⁶

= 123.5x 10⁻³ radian .

first order peak is formed at an angle of 123.5 x 10⁻³ radian .

Which is the dependent variable, the stars or the constellation
a_sh-v [17]

The constellation is the dependent variable because they depend on the stars to form them.

Stars are independent variables in this case because they do not need constellations to form them.

Constellations are dependent variables in this case because they depend on stars to form them. Constellations are literally a group of stars that make an imaginary picture to us.
