Sodium cyanide, NaCN, is a salt formed from the neutralization of the weak acid hydrocyanic acid, HCN, with the strong base sodi

um hydroxide. Given that the value of Ka for hydrocyanic acid is 4.90×10−10, what is the pH of a 0.265 M solution of sodium cyanide at 25∘C?

Answer:

pH = 11.37

Explanation:

Sodium cyanide will dissociate into sodium ion and cyanide ion. This cyanide ion will get hydrolyzed.The ICE table for hydrolysis of cyanide ion is:

                        CN^{-}+ H_{2}O----------->HCN + OH^{-}

Initial                      0.265                                  0         0

Change                 -x                                           +x        +x

Equilibrium        0.265-x                                     x          x

K=\frac{[HCN][OH^{-}}{[CN^{-}]}

This K is Kb of HCN

Kb = Kw / Ka

Kb=\frac{10^{-14}}{4.9X10^{-10}}=2.04X10^{-5}

Putting values

2.04X10^{-5}=\frac{x^{2} }{(0.265-x)}

x can be ignored in denominator as Kb is very low

2.04X10^{-5}=\frac{x^{2} }{(0.265)}

x= 2.33X10⁻³ M = [OH⁻]

pOH = -log[OH⁻]

pOH = -log(2.33X10⁻³ )

pOH = 2.63

pH = 14- pOH = 14-2.63 = 11.37

How many grams of Fe2+ are there in 0.003109 moles of Fe2+?
Sergio [31]

Answer: 0.174 g

Explanation:

First of all understand that charge on an atom like here 2+ will not vary molar mass. because ions are formed by loss or gain of electrons and electrons do not contribute to the mass of an atom or ion. so losing or gaining electron doesnt create any difference.

molar mass of Fe, i.e. mass of 1 mole of Fe is 56 g. So, mass of 1 mole of Fe2+ will also be 56 g.

given is 0.003109 moles of Fe2+,

Use maths,

1 mole of Fe2+ weighs 56 g

So, 0.003109 moles will weigh = (56 g / 1 mol ) x 0.003109 = 0.174 g.

Root nodules are associations between bacteria and plant roots responsible for
max2010maxim [7]

Answer: Root nodules are associations between bacteria and plant roots responsible for nitrogen fixation.

Explanation:

  • As nitrogen present in atmosphere cannot be used by plants directly.
  • Nitrogen present in atmosphere is converted into nitrogen compounds by bacteria which is present in root nodules of a plant.
  • These compounds of nitrogen are then used by plants for various functions.
