Twenty toothpicks, each 6 cm long, form a figure consisting of six equilateral triangles and a rectangle as shown. What is the t
Roman55 [17]

The total area of the figure is 139.20 square centimeters

Areas

The area of a shape is the amount of space it occupies

<h3>Composite figure</h3>

The figure (see attachment) is a composite figure, and the total area is the sum of the areas of each shape that makes up the complete figure

The shape has 6 equilateral triangles, each of which has an area of:

A_1 = \sqrt{\frac{3s^2}{4}}

Where:

s = 6 --- the length of each toothpick

The area of the rectangle is then represented as:

A_2 =3s \times s

A_2 =3s^2

So, the total area of the figure is:

Total = 6A_1 + A_2

This gives

Total =6 \times \sqrt{\frac{3s^2}{4}} + 3s^2

Substitute 6 for s

Total =6 \times \sqrt{\frac{3(6)^2}{4}} + 3(6)^2

Total =6 \times \sqrt{27} + 108

Total =6 \times 5.20+ 108

Total =139.20

Hence, the total area of the figure is 139.20 square centimeters

How do you find the average rate of change through an interval
soldier1979 [14.2K]
In order to find average rate of change over an interval, do the y2-y1/x2-x1. Solve y for x=9 and x= 4
y2 = -3(9-4)^2 + 3 = -72
y1 = -3(4-4)^2 + 3 = 3

Now, x2 matches with y2 and and x1 matches with y1 obviously...
-72 - 3/9 - 4 = -15

A pilot can fly an airplane 2240 miles with the wind in the same time as she can fly 1920 miles against the wind. If the speed o
Artist 52 [7]
Recall your d = rt, distance = rate * time

so... hmm if the plane has a still air speed of say "r", when it's going with the wind, is not really going "r" fast, is going "r + 40 ", because the wind is adding 40mph to its speed, is really moving.

and when the plane is going against the wind, is not really going "r" fast either, is going " r - 40 ", because the wind is eroding speed from it.

now, it went 2240 miles for say "t" hours, and it did 1920 miles for the same length of time, "t" hours.

\bf \begin{array}{lccclll}&#10;&distance&rate&time\\&#10;&-----&-----&-----\\&#10;\textit{with the wind}&2240&r+40&t\\&#10;\textit{against the wind}&1920&r-40&t&#10;\end{array}&#10;\\\\\\&#10;\begin{cases}&#10;2240=(r+40)t\implies \frac{2240}{r+40}=\boxed{t}\\&#10;1920=(r-40)t\\&#10;----------\\&#10;1920=(r-40)\left( \boxed{\frac{2240}{r+40}} \right)&#10;\end{cases}&#10;\\\\\\&#10;1920=\cfrac{(r-40)2240}{r+40}\implies 1920(r+40)=(r-40)2240&#10;\\\\\\&#10;1920r+76800=2240r-89600\implies 166400=320r&#10;\\\\\\&#10;\cfrac{166400}{320}=r

and surely you know how much that is.
