height of the hill, h = 15 m

To find:

  • the mechanical energy of the train

The mechanical energy of the train = kinetic energy + potential energy

The kinetic energy (KE) at the train at bottom hill is calculated as:

K.E = \frac{1}{2} mv^2\\\\K.E = 0.5 \times 5500\times (15.278)^2\\\\K.E = 641,897.53 \ J

The potential energy (P.E) of the train on top hill is calculated as:

P.E = mgh

P.E = 5500 x 9.81 x 15

P.E = 809,325 J

The mechanical energy of the train = K.E + P.E

The mechanical energy of the train = 641,897.53 J + 809,325 J
