Let the Cost price be x

Mark up percent=40%

Now

Mark up=

$\\ \sf\longmapsto 40\%\:of\:x$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto \dfrac{40}{100}\times x$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto \dfrac{40x}{100}$

$\\ \sf\longmapsto 0.04x$

Just multiply The CP by 0.04 to get the answer
