In full detail, explain what happens during the electrolysis of a NaCl brine? Be sure to identify what is being oxidized and wha
yuradex [85]

Answer:

Explanation:

Electrolysis of aqeous sodium chloride(NaCl)

Electrolysis is a process that converts electrical energy into chemical energy.

Electrolytic processes involves three major steps:

1. Ionization of electrolyte and water

2. Migration of ions to electrodes

3. Discharge of ions at the electrodes.

For the Electrolysis of brine, we follow these three steps:

1. Ionization of the aqeous brine solution:

NaCl → Na⁺ + Cl⁻

H₂O ⇄H⁺ + OH⁻

2. Migration of ions to the electrodes

The positive charges Na⁺ and H⁺ would both go to the cathode which is the negatively charged electrode

The negative charges Cl⁻ and OH⁻ migrates to the anode which are the positively charged electrodes. The anode is positively charged electrode.

3. Discharge of ions at the electrodes.

The preferential discharge of ions is based on the activity series and concentration of the ions.

On the activity series H is lower and it discharges preferentially to Na in the cathode:

2H⁺ + 2e⁻ → H₂

At this electrode, the cathode, reduction occurs and H⁺ ions are reduced.

At the anode Cl⁻ and OH⁻ migrates. But Cl⁻ is discharged preferentially due to its higher concentration.

2Cl⁻ ⇄ Cl₂ + 2e⁻

This is the oxidation half and Cl is oxidized

Treatment of an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone with basic aqueous hydrogen peroxide yields an epoxy ketone. the reaction is speci
Misha Larkins [42]
The reaction mechanism for an alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone to react with basic peroxide to form an epoxide is shown below with a general ketone. The basic hydroxide is used to deprotonate the peroxide molecule to create a strong HOO- nucleophile. The peroxide then attacks the beta-carbon of the alkene and this pushes the electrons up to the oxygen of the carbonyl. This is the first intermediate that is formed during this reaction.

After the intermediate is formed, the lone pair from the oxygen pushes back down to form the carbonyl once more and this breaks a carbon-carbon bond which attacks the oxygen of the peroxy group, ultimately substituting an -OH group and forming the final epoxide ketone product.

Which answer correctly ranks the atoms in terms of decreasing electronegativity (the highest electronegativity first)? which ans
Degger [83]

Answer:

O, N, C, H

Explanation:

Electronegativity of an element is the property that combines the ability of its atom to lose or gain electrons. It measures the relative tendency with which the atoms of the element attracts valence electrons in a chemical bond.

On the periodic table, Electronegativity increases across the period but decreases down a group.

To solve the given problem, let us use thE Pauling's table of electronegativities to compare the electronegativities of the elements.

On the table:

C = 2.5

H = 2.1

O = 3.5

N = 3.0

In terms of decreasing electronegativities, the atoms are arranged as:

O N C H

Which of the following would not be a clear indication of a chemical change
Alekssandra [29.7K]

I believe the answer is "After adding two substances together a new order is detected" because nearly all of the other answers suggest a chemical change has taken place. The reason I say "almost" is because answer two and four results in bubbles forming so the answer cannot be both. The only one to not clearly show a chemical change has occurred is the last answer.
