Light with a wavelength of 600 nm is incident on a gemstone made of cubic zirconia (ᡦ =2.18) from air. The light makes an angle

of 30° with the surface of the gem before entering it. The refracted ray makes an angle of 30° with the normal. What is the frequency of the light in the gemstone? (1 THz = 1 terahertz =10ଵଶ Hz)

Answer:

500 THz .

Explanation:

Velocity of light in air = 3 x10⁸ m /s

wave length of light = 600 nm

= 600 x 10⁻⁹ m

= 6 x 10⁻⁷ m

frequency in air  = velocity in air  / wave length in air

= 3 x 10⁸ /  6 x 10⁻⁷

= .5 x 10¹⁵ Hz

= 5 x 10¹⁴Hz

= 500 x 10¹² Hz

= 500 THz

When light enters the medium of gem , its wavelength and velocity changes in such a way that its frequency remains constant. So in the medium of gem also its frequency remains 500 THz .

The scanner records the time from when a ultrasound wave is emitted to when its reflection is received
telo118 [61]

Explanation:

The scanner records the time from when a ultrasound wave is emitted to when its reflection is received. A technician calculates the depth of the reflection using the equation as :

\text{depth}=\dfrac{1}{2}\times \text{speed of ultrasound in patient}\times \text{time recorded by scanner}

The distance covered by ultrasonic wave when it was emitted and gets reflected is 2d. Speed is given by :

v=\dfrac{d}{t}

d is distance and t is time

Here, d = 2d

So, the factor of (1/2) is used because the distance covered by the wave is 2 times when it was emitted and received.

Can anyone define thermostat and list electrical appliances that have a thermostat?
Tresset [83]
A thermostat is a switch that operates itself when the temperature
goes above or below a temperature that the user can set.

-- Before you go to bed, you set the thermostat for 65° .
If the temperature in the house goes below 65° during the night,
the thermostat turns on the furnace, and keeps it running until
the house warms up to 65°.  Then it shuts the furnace off.

-- After breakfast, you set the thermostat for 75°.
If the temperature in the house goes above 75°, during the day,
the thermostat turns on the air conditioner, and keeps it running until
the house cools down to 75°.  Then it shuts the air conditioner off.

-- On Sunday morning, you put the slow cooker on the kitchen counter,
and you throw in a big roast, a sliced onion, some baby carrots, some
sliced potatoes, some vegetable stock, salt, pepper, garlic, chili powder,
and tomato paste.  Then you put the cover on, turn the power on, and
set the slow cooker to "LOW".  The heater in the slow cooker turns on.
Whenever the temperature in the crock gets higher than 160°, the
thermostat in the slow cooker turns off the heater, and keeps it off
until the crock cools down to 160°.  Then the thermostat turns the
heater on again.
By dinner time, you have a hot, juicy, scrumptious pot roast, ready
to eat.  It's not too hot, not too cold, not too tough, not dried out, and
it melts in your mouth.
You're still thinking about it when you go to bed, and your mom gives you
a slice to take to school for your lunch on Monday.

Once the genes are copied, where do they go?
Anna [14]

By copying their genomes, they retain the tool kit and at the same time generate a garage full of spare parts. Gene duplication can provide the raw material for expression changes to occur, and polyploidy itself can trigger epigenetic changes
