If DE and BC are parallel, their sides must be proportional.

2/x+1 = 5/4x-2
Use cross multiplication:
8x-4=5x+5
3x=9
x=3

Plug this in:
x: 3
AE: 3+1 = 4
CE: 4(3)-2 = 12-2 = 10
AB: 2 + 5 = 7
AC: AE+CE = 4 + 10 = 14

The ages of the members of a family are 46, 48, 21, 12, 15, and 8. what is the mean age?
Sidana [21]
Mean means to average. in order to average, add all the numbers then divide by how many numbers you have.

All these ages add up to 150. because there are 7 ages, divide by 7. this is 21.4 which can be rounded to about 21

46 + 48 + 21 + 12 + 15 + 8 = 150
150 ÷ 7= 21.4285 = 21

Find the area of a square with a diagonal of 4cm.
inessss [21]
Let the side length be s.  Then sqrt(s^2+s^2) is the length of the diagonal.

sqrt(2s^2) = 4 cm, so 2s^2 = 16 cm, and s^2 = 8, so that s = 2sqrt(2).

The area of this square is s^2, which here is 4(2), or 8 square units (answer)
