A 0.90-kg falcon is diving at 28.0 m/s at a downward angle of 35° . It catches a 0.325-kg pigeon from behind in midair. What is

their combined velocity after impact if the pigeon’s initial velocity was 7.00 m/s directed horizontally? Note that ????ˆ1,i is a unit vector pointing in the direction in which the falcon is initially flying.

Answer:

22.11 m / s

Explanation:

The falcon catches the prey from behind means both are flying in the same direction ( suppose towards the left )

initial velocity of falcon = 28 cos 35 i - 28 sin 35 j

( falcon was flying in south east direction making 35 degree from the east )

momentum = .9 ( 28 cos 35 i - 28 sin 35 j  )

= 20.64 i - 14.45 j

initial velocity of pigeon

= 7 i

initial momentum = .325 x 7i

= 2.275 i

If final velocity of composite mass of falcon and pigeon be V

Applying law of conservation of momentum

( .9 + .325) V = 20.64 i - 14.45 j +2.275 i

V = ( 22.915 i - 14.45 j ) / 1.225

= 18.70 i - 11.8 j

magnitude of V

= √ [  (18.7 )² + ( 11.8 )²]

= 22.11 m / s

At a particular instant, a moving body has a kinetic energy of 295 J and a momentum of magnitude 25.1 kg · m/s.(a)What is the sp
motikmotik

Answer:

a) 23.51 m/s

b) 1.07 kg

Explanation:

Parameters given:

Kinetic energy, K = 295 J

Momentum, p = 25.1 kgm/s

a) The kinetic energy of a body is given as:

K = \frac{1}{2} mv^2

where m = mass of the body and v = speed of the body

We know that momentum is given as:

p = mv

Therefore:

K = 1/2 * pv

=> v = 2K / p

v = (2 * 295) / 25.1 = 23.51 m/s

The velocity of the body at that instant is 23.51 m/s.

b) Momentum is given as:

p = mv

=> m = p / v

m = 25.1 / 23.51  = 1.07 kg

The mass of the body at that instant is 1.07 kg

A Navy vessel is traveling due north during wartime. A torpedo has been launched by an enemy directly toward the stern (rear) of
Anika [276]

Answer:

The correct option is;

B) No, the Navy vessel is slower

Explanation:

The speed of some torpedoes can be as high as 370 km/h. The average speed of a fast Navy vessel is approximately 110 km/h

Therefore, the torpedoes travel approximately 3 times as fast as the (slower) Navy vessel, such that the torpedo covers three times the distance of the Navy vessel in the same time and therefore, if the Navy vessel and the torpedo continue in a straight line (in the same direction) due north the vessel can not outrun the torpedo

Therefore, no the Navy vessel travels slower than a torpedo.
