Its simple really. If say a person bought a sandwich for $5.00, and the tax was 7%. You would have to multiply the amount of the sandwich to 0.07. Doing this would tell you how much the tax is. Then you would simply add them to get your total. This also applies with tip, markup, and discount.

This happens to be an arithmetic sequence, because we go up the same amount from one term to the next, but please do not assume that is  required for creating a recursive definition. It is not.
