The type of investigation is she is conducting by determining the period in which it is from is referred to as the geologic age.

This is defined as the time period in which the fossil was present on the earth and can be done using various methods such as radiometric dating methods etc. The age gotten will help scientists to ascertain different information about the organism in this context.

Fossil on the other hand which is the remains of organisms preserved in the earth crust can be studied to find out the differences in the features of organisms and how they were able to adapt to the changing environmental conditions.
