A confined aquifer with a porosity of 0.15 is 30 m thick. The potentiometric surface elevation at two observation wells 1000 m a

part are 52.35 m and 50.90 m. If the horizontal hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer is 25 m/day. Determine the flow rate per unit width of the aquifer, specific discharge, and average linear velocity of the flow assuming steady unidirectional flow. How long would it take for a tracer to travel the distance between the observation wells?

Answer:

Part (a) The flow rate per unit width of the aquifer is 1.0875 m³/day

Part (b) The specific discharge of the flow is 0.0363 m/day

Part (c) The average linear velocity of the flow is 0.242 m/day

Part (d) The time taken for a tracer to travel the distance between the observation wells is 4132.23 days = 99173.52 hours

Explanation:

Part (a) the flow rate per unit width of the aquifer

From Darcy's law;

q = -Kb\frac{dh}{dl}

where;

q is the flow rate

K is the permeability or conductivity of the aquifer = 25  m/day

b is the aquifer thickness

dh is the change in th vertical hight = 50.9m - 52.35m = -1.45 m

dl is the change in the horizontal hight = 1000 m

q = -(25*30)*(-1.45/1000)

q = 1.0875 m³/day

Part (b) the specific discharge of the flow

V = \frac{Q}{A} = \frac{q}{b} = -K\frac{dh}{dl}\\\\V = -(25 m/d).(\frac{-1.45 m}{1000 m}) = 0.0363 m/day

V = 0.0363 m/day

Part (c) the average linear velocity of the flow assuming steady unidirectional flow

Va = V/Φ

Φ is the porosity = 0.15

Va = 0.0363 / 0.15

Va = 0.242 m/day

Part (d) the time taken for a tracer to travel the distance between the observation wells

The distance between the two wells = 1000 m

average linear velocity = 0.242 m/day

Time = distance / speed

Time = (1000 m) / (0.242 m/day)

Time = 4132.23 days

        = 4132.23 days *\frac{24 .hrs}{1.day} = 99173.52, hours

anygoal [31]

Answer:

2.24 seconds

Explanation:

xf = xo + vo t + 1/2 at^2

45 = 0 + 15 t  + 1/2 (4.5) t^2

   2.25 t^2 + 15t - 45 = 0              Quadratic formula shows  t = 2.24 seconds

A hungry rat is placed in a maze. It walks the following path to find a piece of cheese. 4.0m N, 7.5 m E, 6.8 m S, 3.7 m E, 3.6
storchak [24]

Answer:

Explanation:

We shall take the help of vector form of displacement . Taking east as i and north as j

4.0m N = 4 j

7.5 m E = 7.5 i

6.8 m S = - 6.8 j

3.7 m E, = 3.7 i

3.6 m S = - 3.6 j

5.3 m W = - 5.3 i

3.7 m N, = 3.7 j

5.6 m W = - 5.6 i

4.4 m S = - 4.4 j

4.9 m W = -  4.9 i

Total displacement = 4j +7.5 i -6.8j+3.7i-3.6j-5.3i+3.7j-5.6i-4.4j-4.9i

= -4.6 i -7.1 j

magnitude of displacement = \sqrt{(4.6^2+7.1^2)}

= 8.46 m

Direction

Tanθ = 7.1/ 4.6

θ = 57⁰ south of west .

distance walked = 4+7.5 +6.8+3.7+3.6+5.3+3.7+5.6+4.4+4.9

= 49.5 m

An object in the shape of a thin ring has radius a and mass M. A uniform sphere with mass m and radius R is placed with its cent
madreJ [45]

Answer:

F = GMmx/[√(a² + x²)]³

Explanation:

The force dF on the mass element dm of the ring due to the sphere of mass, m at a distance L from the mass element is

dF = GmdM/L²

Since the ring is symmetrical, the vertical components of this force cancel out leaving the horizontal components to add.

So, the horizontal components add from two symmetrically opposite mass elements dM,

Thus, the horizontal component of the force is

dF' = dFcosФ where Ф is the angle between L and the x axis

dF' = GmdMcosФ/L²

L² = a² + x² where a = radius of ring and x = distance of axis of ring from sphere.

L = √(a² + x²)

cosФ = x/L

dF' = GmdMcosФ/L²

dF' = GmdMx/L³

dF' = GmdMx/[√(a² + x²)]³

Integrating both sides we have

∫dF' = ∫GmdMx/[√(a² + x²)]³

∫dF' = Gm∫dMx/[√(a² + x²)]³    ∫dM = M

F = GmMx/[√(a² + x²)]³

F = GMmx/[√(a² + x²)]³

So, the force due to the sphere of mass m is

F = GMmx/[√(a² + x²)]³
