Removal of amniotic fluid using a hollow needle is called amniocentesis. This  procedure is used to obtain a small sample of the amniotic fluid that surrounds the fetus during pregnancy. Amniotic fluid contains cells shed by the fetus and can be used for diagnose of chromosomal disorders. The also contains other substances that provide information about certain conditions.
