a solid metal sphere of radius 3.00m carries a total charge of -5.50. what is the magnitude of the electric field at a distance
aivan3 [116]

Answer:

(a) Electric field at 0.250 m is zero.

(b)  Electric field at 2.90 m is zero.

(c) Electric field at 3.10 m is - 5.15 x 10³ V/m.

(d) Electric field at 8.00 m is - 0.77 x 10³ V/m.

Explanation:

Let Q and R are the charge and radius of the solid metal sphere. The solid metal sphere behave as conductor, so total charge Q is on the surface of the sphere.

Electric field inside and outside the metal sphere is :

E = 0 for r ≤ R ( inside )

  = \frac{KQ}{r^{2} } for r > R ( outside )

Here K is electric constant and r is the distance from the center of the metal sphere.

(a) Electric field at 0.250 m is zero as r < R i.e. 0.250 m < 3 m from the above equation.

(b)  Electric field at 2.90 m is zero as r < R i.e. 2.90 m < 3 m from the above equation.

(c) Electric field at 3.10 m is given by the relation as r > R :

E = \frac{KQ}{r^{2} }

Substitute 9 x 10⁹ N m²/C² for K, -5.50 μC for Q and 3.10 m for r in the above equation.

E = - \frac{9\times10^{9}\times5.50\times10^{-6}  }{3.10^{2} }

E = - 5.15 x 10³ V/m

(d) Electric field at 8.00 m is given by the relation as r > R :

E = \frac{KQ}{r^{2} }

Substitute 9 x 10⁹ N m²/C² for K, -5.50 μC for Q and 8.00 m for r in the above equation.

E = - \frac{9\times10^{9}\times5.50\times10^{-6}  }{8^{2} }

E = - 0.77 x 10³ V/m

A firefighting crew uses a water cannon that shoots water at 25.0 m/s at a fixed angle of 53.0° above the horizontal. The fire-f
zysi [14]

Answer:

8.8 m and 52.5 m

Explanation:

The vertical component and horizontal component of water velocity leaving the hose are

v_v = vsin(\alpha) = 25sin(53^0) = 25*0.8 = 19.97 m/s

v_h = vcos(\alpha) = 25cos(53^0) = 25*0.6 = 15 m/s

Neglect air resistance, vertically speaking, gravitational acceleration g = -9.8m/s2 is the only thing that affects water motion. We can find the time t that it takes to reach the blaze 10m above ground level

s = v_vt + gt^2/2

10 = 19.97t - 9.8t^2/2

4.9t^2 - 19.97t + 10 = 0

t= \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}

t= \frac{19.9658877511823\pm \sqrt{(-19.9658877511823)^2 - 4*(4.9)*(10)}}{2*(4.9)}

t= \frac{19.9658877511823\pm14.24}{9.8}

t = 3.49 or t = 0.58

We have 2 solutions for t, one is 0.58 when it first reach the blaze during the 1st shoot up, the other is 3.49s when it falls down

t is also the times it takes to travel across horizontally. We can use this to compute the horizontal distance between the fire-fighters and the building

s_1 = v_ht_1 = 15*0.58 = 8.8 m

s_2 = v_ht_2 = 15*3.49 = 52.5m

A 5,000 kg satellite is orbiting the Earth in a circular path. The height of the satellite above the surface of the Earth is 800
Arada [10]

Explanation:

The given data is as follows.

            m = 5000 kg,            h = 800 km = 0.8 \times 10^{6} m

    R_{e} = 6.37 \times 10^{6} m,    r = R + h = 7.17 \times 10^{6} m

   M_{e} = 5.98 \times 10^{24} kg,   G = 6.67 \times 10^{-11} Nm^{2}/kg^{2}

As we know that,

              \frac{mv^{2}}{r} = \frac{GmM_{e}}{r^{2}}

                      v = \sqrt{\frac{GM_{e}}{r^{2}}}

And, it is known that formula to calculate angular velocity is as follows.

               \omega = \frac{v}{r} = \sqrt{\frac{GM_{e}}{r^{3}}}

                            v = \sqrt{\frac{GM_{e}}{r^{3}}}

                               = \sqrt{\frac{6.67 \times 10^{-11} Nm^{2}/kg^{2} \times 5.98 \times 10^{-24} kg^{-2}}{(7.17 \times 10^{6} m)^{3}}}

                                = 1.0402 \times 10^{-3} rad/s

Thus, we can conclude that speed of the satellite is 1.0402 \times 10^{-3} rad/s.
