When two fluorine atoms bond together in F2, what type of covalent bond do they form?
Angelina_Jolie [31]

The correct statement is " A single bond, because they overlap orbitals to share one pair of electrons." A fluorine atom is unstable with 7 electrons in its valence shell and so needs one more electron  to achieve stability. This is according to the octet rule which states that an atom will gain or lose electrons until there are 8 electrons in its valence shell. So each fluorine donates an electron to form a single pair and the F_2 achieves a noble gas configuration.

If an atom of Bromine (Br) becomes an ion, which of the following does it most likely form?
lawyer [7]

Answer:

An atom of Bromine (Br) forms an ion and becomes Br⁻

Explanation:

  • Atoms of elements gain or lose electron(s) to attain a stable configuration and form ions.
  • When an atom gains electron(s) it forms a negatively charged ion called an anion.
  • For example, Bromine is a halogen and its atom requires to gain one electron to attain stability and form a bromine ion (Br⁻).
  • When an atom loses electron(s) it forms a positively charged ion called a cation.
  • For instance, atoms of calcium(Ca) requires to lose two electrons to attain stability and form calcium ion (Ca²⁺).
