Refer to the diagram shown below.

W = 87.5 N, the weight of the sandwiched board.
μ = 0.622, the static coefficient of friction.

From the free body diagram of the sandwiched board, obtain
2μF = W
F = W/(2μ) = 87.5/(2*0.622) = 70.34 N

Answer: 70.34 N

The compression forces acting on both sides of the center board = <u>70.338 N</u>

<h3>Further explanation </h3>

The force acting on a system with static equilibrium is 0

\large {\boxed {\bold {\sum F = 0}}

(forces acting as translational motion only, not including rotational forces)

\displaystyle \sum F_x = 0 \\\\\ sum F_y = 0

For objects undergoing rotation, the equilibrium must be met

\large {\boxed {\bold {\sum \tau = 0}}

The force acting on the touchpad between the two fields is called the normal force  (N)

While the frictional force arises because of 2 objects that come into direct contact, especially when there is motion between two objects that are in direct contact.

There are 2 friction forces

  • static friction: fs = us.N
  • kinetic friction: fk = uk .N

The board sandwiched between two other boards will not fall if

a downward force = an upward force

or ΣFy = 0 (idle / equilibrium)

so that

A downward force = weight of the board sandwiched = 87.5 N

An upward force = arises from two static friction forces namely: us.N (N =  reaction force of the compression forces=F) ---> us.F

then the force that works can be stated:

EFy = 0

W = 2fs

W = 2 (us.F)

87.5 N = 2 (0.622. F)

F = 70,338 N

yulyashka [42]

Answer:

Option (b) is correct.

Explanation:

The motion under the influence of gravity is called projectile motion.

The acceleration due to gravity is constant through out the motion and it is always acting downwards.

When an athlete jumps and follow the projectile path, it always have the same horizontal velocity as there is no acceleration in the horizontal direction.

Also he has the vertical acceleration constant which is equal to the acceleration due to gravity and acts towards the center of earth.

Option (b) is correct.

A thin uniform rod of mass M and length L is bent at its center so that the two segments are now perpendicular to each other. Fi
Tatiana [17]

Answer:

(a) I_A=1/12ML²

(b) I_B=1/3ML²

Explanation:

We know that the moment of inertia of a rod of mass M and lenght L about its center is 1/12ML².

(a) If the rod is bent exactly at its center, the distance from every point of the rod to the axis doesn't change. Since the moment of inertia depends on the distance of every mass to this axis, the moment of inertia remains the same. In other words, I_A=1/12ML².

(b) The two ends and the point where the two segments meet form an isorrectangle triangle. So the distance between the ends d can be calculated using the Pythagorean Theorem:

d=\sqrt{(\frac{1}{2}L) ^{2}+(\frac{1}{2}L) ^{2} } =\sqrt{\frac{1}{2}L^{2} } =\frac{1}{\sqrt{2} } L=\frac{\sqrt{2} }{2} L

Next, the point where the two segments meet, the midpoint of the line connecting the two ends of the rod, and an end of the rod form another rectangle triangle, so we can calculate the distance between the two axis x using Pythagorean Theorem again:

x=\sqrt{(\frac{1}{2}L)^{2}-(\frac{\sqrt{2}}{4}L)  ^{2} } =\sqrt{\frac{1}{8} L^{2} } =\frac{1}{2\sqrt{2}} L=\frac{\sqrt{2}}{4} L

Finally, using the Parallel Axis Theorem, we calculate I_B:

I_B=I_A+Mx^{2} \\\\I_B=\frac{1}{12} ML^{2} +\frac{1}{4}  ML^{2} =\frac{1}{3} ML^{2}
