In this case, the two vectors are in the same direction, so they simply add:

<span> total motion = 18m/s + 2.5m/s = 20.5m/s to the west </span>

F the boat's velocity is 18m/sec relative to the water in the river and not the shore, it would need to be added the river speed of 2.5m/sec to get a total of 20.5m/sec. The 20.5m/sec would then be the total velocity of the boat relative to the shore. From personal experience, I know that when one runs with the tide, one is adding the tide flow speed to one's boat speed (what it would be in neutral waters) to get a sometimes much faster speed.

A river flows at 2m/s. The velocity of a ferry relative to the shore is 4m /s at right angle to the current. What is the velocit
monitta

The velocity of the ferry relative to the current is 4.5 m/s.

<h3>Relative velocity</h3>
  • Relative velocity is the velocity of a body as observed from the reference point of another body either stationary or in motion.

Since the river is flowing parallel to the shore and the ferry is moving perpendicular to the shore, their velocities are at right angles to each other.

The two velocities form a right angled-triangle of sides 2, 4 and a hypotenuse which gives the relative velocity of the ferry to the current.

Using Pythagoras rule:

  • c² = a² + b²
  • Let c be the hypotenuse
  • a =  velocity of the ferry, and
  • b = the velocity of the current, and

c² = 4² + 2²

c² = 16 + 4

c = 20

c = √20

c = 4.47 m/s

c ≈ 4.5 m/s

Therefore, the velocity of the ferry relative to the current is 4.5 m/s.

Suppose that a public address system emits sound uniformly in all directions and that there are no reflections. The intensity at
dybincka [34]

Answer:

The intensity at a spot 71 m away is 4.02*10^{-5}  Wm^{-2}

Explanation:

Given:

Initial intensity,I_{1}=3.0*10^{-4} Wm^{-2} at a distance, d_{1} = 26 m

Required:

New intensity, I_{2} =? at a distance, d_{2} = 71 m

Using the inverse square law,

I ∝ \frac{1}{d^{2} }

⇒I_{1}I_{1}d_{1}^{2}  =I_{2}d_{2}^{2}

I_{2} =\frac{I_{1} d_{1}^{2}  }{d_{2}^{2}} =\frac{3.0*10^{-4}*26^{2}  }{71^{2} } \\×

I_{2}=4.02*10^{-5}  Wm^{-2}

Thus, the intensity at a spot that is 71 m away is 4.02*10^{-5}  Wm^{-2}

Lynna [10]

Answer:

Xcm = (6 * 0 + 4 & 3 + 2 * 0) / 12 = 1

Ycm = (6 * 0 + 4 * 0 + 2 * 3) / 12 = 1/2

(Xcm , Ycm) = (1 , 1/2)
