An aqueous solution in a 55 gallon (208 l drum), characterized by minimal buffering capacity, received 4kg of phenol and 1.5 kg of sodium phenate. What is the ph of the solution. The pka of phenol = 9.98. Mw of phenol and sodium phenate are 94 g/mol and 116 g/mol, respectively.

Volume of solution = 55 gallons = 208.2 L [ 1 gallon = 3.78 L]

moles of phenol = mass / molar mass = 4000 g / 94 = 42.55 moles

moles of sodium phenate = mass / molar mass = 1500 / 116 = 12.93 moles

pKa of phenol = 9.98

We know that the pH of buffer is calculated using Hendersen Hassalbalch's equation

pH = pKa + log [salt] / [acid]

volume is same for both the sodium phenate and phenol has we can directly take the moles of each in the formula

pH = 9.98 + log [12.93 / 42.55] = 9.46

Butter has a specific gravity of 0.86. What is the mass of 2.45 L<br> of butter?
Tema [17]

Answer:

mass of the butter is 2.107 kg

Explanation:

specific gravity = destiny of the substance / density of

the water at 4°C

0.86 = density of the butter / 1000

where density of the water is 1000 kg/m^3 at 4°C

density of the butter = 860kg/m^3

now,

density of the butter = mass of the butter / volume

860 = mass of the butter / 2.45 × 10^-3

( 1 L = 10^ -3 m^3)

mass of the butter = 2.107 kg

A 0.65 M solution of an unknown amine base is found to be 2.2% ionized at equilibrium. Calculate the value for Kb for this amine
mihalych1998 [28]

The value of Kb of the unknown amine is 3.22 x 10^-4.

Weak electrolytes:

The compound which do not dissociate completely when added to the aqueous solution are called weak electrolytes. The electrolyte and its ions exists in equilibrium. In case of weak base, the equilibrium constant is expressed as Kb.

Calculations:

Step 1:

The percentage of amine ionized at equilibrium is 2.2%.

NH3   +     H2O ------>    NH4+   +    OH-

The concentration of conjugate acid at equilibrium is calculated as:

2.2 = (x/0.65) x 100

x = 0.0143 M

Step 2:

The equilibrium constant (Kb) is calculated as:

Kb = x^2/0.65 - x

= (0.0143)^2/(0.65 - x)

= 3.22 x 10^-4

Why do atoms form Chemical Bonds ?
klemol [59]

Answer:

Atoms form chemical bonds to make their outer electron shells more stable. The type of chemical bond maximizes the stability of the atoms that form it. Covalent bonds form when sharing atoms results in the highest stability. Other types of bonds besides ionic and covalent chemical bonds exist, too.
