Soon after Earth was formed, heat released by the decay of radioactive elements raised the average internal temperature from 300

to 3000 K, at about which value it remains today. Assuming an average coefficient of volume expansion of 3.2 × 10–5 K–1, by how much has the radius of Earth increased since the planet was formed?

Answer:

97.03%

Explanation:

The equation for volumetric expansion due to thermal expansion is as follows

V/Vo=(1+γΔT)

V=final volume

Vo=initial volume

γ=coefficient of volume expansion=3.2 × 10–5 K–1

ΔT=

temperature difference

assuming that the earth is a sphere the volume is given by

V=(4/3)pi R^3

if we find the relationship between the initial and final volume we have the following

\frac{V}{Vo}  =\frac{ \frac{4}{3} \pi r^{3} }{ \frac{4}{3} \pi ro^{3}}=\frac{r^{3} }{ro^{3}}

taking into account the previous equation

r/ro=(1+γΔT)^(1/3)

r/r0=(1-3.2x10-5(3000-300))^(1/3)=

r/ro=0.9703=97.03%

What is the density of a piece of wood with a mass of 25 kg<br> and a volume of 0.0385 m³?
Orlov [11]

Answer:

649kg/m^3

Explanation:

Let p be the density of this particular object.

Formula for density:

p =  \frac{mass \: (in \: kg)}{volume \: (in \:  {m}^{3}) }

We can substitute the givenmass and volume to find density of the object.

p =  \frac{25kg}{0.0385 {m}^{3} }  \\  = 649kg \: per \:  {m}^{3}

Therefore the density of this object is 649kg/m^3.

Energy is to be stored in a flywheel in the shape of a uniform solid disk with a radius of R = 1.22 m and a mass of 67.0 kg . To
eduard

Answer: 71.7 KJ

Explanation:

The rotational kinetic energy of a rotating body can be written as follows:

Krot = ½ I ω2

Now, any point on the rim of the flywheel, is acted by a centripetal force, according to Newton’s 2nd Law, as follows:

Fc = m. ac

It can be showed that the centripetal acceleration, is related with the angular velocity and the radius, as follows:

ac =  ω2 r

We know that this acceleration has a limit value, so , we can take this limit to obtain a maximum value for the angular velocity also.

As the flywheel is a solid disk, the rotational inertia I is just ½ m r2.

Replacing in the expression for the Krot, we have:

Krot= ½ (1/2 mr2.ac/r) = ¼ mr ac = ¼ 67.0 Kg. 1.22 m . 3,510 m/s2 = 71. 7 KJ

Raindrops fall vertically at 7.5 m/s relative to the Earth. What does an observer in a car moving at 20.2 m/s in a straight line
Vilka [71]

Answer:

vDP = 21.7454 m/s

θ = 200.3693°

Explanation:

Given

vDE = 7.5 m/s

vPE = 20.2 m/s

Required:  vDP

Assume that

vDE to be in direction of - j

vPE to be in direction of i

According to relative motion concept the velocity vDP is given by

vDP = vDE - vPE     (I)

Substitute in (I) to get that

vDP = - 7.5 j - 20.2 i

The magnitude of vDP is given by

vDP = √((- 7.5)²+(- 20.2)²) m/s =  21.7454 m/s

θ = Arctan (- 7.5/- 20.2) = 20.3693°

θ is in 3rd quadrant so add 180°

θ = 20.3693° + 180° = 200.3693°
