The law of conservation of mass states that mass can neither be created nor destroyed. This means that, in a chemical reaction, the mass of reactants should be equal to the mass of products.

The equation we have is:
Al + 3HCl .....> H2 + AlCl3
For aluminum: we have one mole in the reactants and one mole in the products. Therefore, aluminum is balanced
For chlorine: we have three moles in the reactants and three moles in the products. Therefore, chlorine is balanced
For hydrogen: we have three moles in the reactants and only two moles in the products. Therefore, hydrogen needs to be balanced as there are fewer hydrogen moles in the products than in the reactants.

Based on this, the right choice is:
Only hydrogen needs to be balanced. There are equal numbers of aluminum and chlorine.

Imagine that you helped to discover a new element:
bulgar [2K]

Answer:

Proton = 119

Electron = 119

Neutron = 183

Explanation:

Mass number (A) = 302

Atomic number (Z) = 119

Proton = atomic number = 119

Since there is no charge on the element, it means the element is neutral.

Therefore,

Electron = proton = 119

Mass number = proton + Neutron

Neutron = Mass number — proton

Neutron = 302 — 119

Neutron = 183

Name two compounds with more exothermic lattice energies than scandium oxide and justify your choice.
N76 [4]

Answer:

1 . Al_2O_3

2. TiO_2

Explanation:

The more stable the ionic compound, the more is it lattice energy.

  • The more the charge on the cation and the anion, the greater is the lattice energy.
  • The less the size of the cation and the anion, the greater is the lattice energy.

Scandium oxide (Sc_2O_3) is an oxide in which Sc^{3+} behaves as cation and O^{2-} behaves as anion.

The compounds which has higher lattice energy than scandium oxide are:

1 . Al_2O_3

This is because the charge are same on the cation and the anion as in the case of the Scandium oxide but the size of the cation Al^{3+} is smaller than Sc^{3+}. Thus, this corresponds to higher lattice energy.

2. TiO_2

This is because the charge on the cation Ti^{4+} is greater than that of Sc^{3+} and also the size of the cation Ti^{4+} is smaller than Sc^{3+}. Thus, this corresponds to higher lattice energy.
