A brine solution of salt flows at a constant rate of 7 L/min into a large tank that initially held 100 L of brine solution in w

hich was dissolved 0.1 kg of salt. The solution inside the tank is kept well stirred and flows out of the tank at the same rate. If the concentration of salt in the brine entering the tank is 0.02 kg/L, determine the mass of salt in the tank after t min. When will the concentration of salt in the tank reach 0.01 kg/L? Determine the mass of salt in the tank after t min.

Answer:

Explanation:

Let x(t) represent the amount of salt (in kg) at any time, t (in minutes).

Step 1

Write down the input rate and output rate in terms of x (showing how you get units). What is the differential equation for x (simplified)?

Input rate: (7L/min) x (0.02kg/L) = 0.14  = 7/50

Output rate: (7L/min) (x/100 kg/L) =   7x / 100

Differential Equation: δx/δt =

=> 7/50 - 7x/100

step 2

Find the general solution for your differential equation

DE is linear with μ(t) = e^(7t/100), so solving we have

x = x(t) = e^(- 7t/100) ∫7/50 e^(- 7t/100) dt

  = 50 + C e^(- 7t/100)

The initial condition mass of salt given is 0.1kg, using this we find the constant of integration

so, when t = 0, x = 0.1, therefore

0.1 = 50 + C

C = - 49.9

Hence x(t) = 50 - 49.9e^(- 7t/100)

When will the concentration of salt in the tank reach 0.01 kg/L?

concentration = 0.01kg/L

This is the same as

x/100 = 0.01

=> x = 1

Substituting x = 1 into the solution yields

1 = 50 - 49.9e^(- 7t/100)

t = 9.2486

Therefore the concentration of salt in the tank reach 0.01kg /L after 9.2486 minutes.

What could be a possible explanation why tectonic plates do not all move in the same direction
antiseptic1488 [7]

Answer:

tectonic plates move in opposite direction

Tectonic plates are not necessarily moving in opposite directions, but if there directions are different they form plate boundaries. If they were moving in the same direction they would become the same plate. The more opposite the direction, the more obvious the fault.

Examples of plate boundaries:

Divergent: moving away from each other - mid-Atlantic ridge

Convergent: moving towards each other - the Himalayas (Indian plate subducting under the Eurasian plate forcing up the mountains)

Transform: sliding laterally along each other - San Andreas fault

What is the best prediction for what will happen when all of the hydrogen in the sun has undergone fusion? helium nuclei will sp
Lena [83]

Helium nuclei splitting to form hydrogen, and the Sun will no longer release energy will occur when all the hydrogen in the sun undergoes fusion.

What is Fusion?

This occurs when two or more atomic nuclei are combined to form one or more different atomic nuclei and subatomic particles.

In a situation where all the hydrogen in the sun has undergone fusion, the helium nuclei will split to form hydrogen, and the Sun will no longer release energy.

The electron in a ground-state h atom absorbs a photon of wavelength 97. 25 nm. to what energy level does the electron move?
Alecsey [184]

The electron in a ground-state H atom absorbs a photon of wavelength 97. 25 nm. Energy level till where the electron move is 4

Rydberg's equation is formula which signifies relation of wavelength of incident photon and the energy level.

Rydberg's equation is used to find out the relation between the wavelength and the Energy Levels:

1/λ = RZ² (1/n₁² - 1/n₂²)

where, λ is wavelength = 97.25 nm

           R is the Rydberg constant = 1.0967 × 10⁷ m

           n₁ is the initial energy level i.e. the Ground state, n₁ = 1

           n₂ is the higher energy level

On substitution of the above value:

1/97.25 × 10⁻⁹ = 1.0967 × 10⁷ ( 1 -  1/n₂²)

On solving,

⇒ n₂ = 4

Hence, the higher energy level is 4

In Hooke's law, Fspring=kΔx , what does the Fspring stand for?
Mrrafil [7]

Answer:

The amount of force acting on the spring.

Explanation:

Here, Fspring= kΔx is a equation denoting the amount of force acting on the spring.

where, k = spring constant.

           Δx= change in the length of the spring.

so, for every Δx change in spring length, kΔx force acts on the spring.
