A bathroom scales works due to gravity. Under normal conditions, a reading can be obtained when your body is pushing some force on the scale. However in this case, since you and the scale are both moving downwards, so your body is no longer pushing on the scale. Therefore the answer is:

<span>The reading will drop to 0 instantly</span>

The bathroom scale gives the reading as zero as soon as the cable of the elevator breaks because the elevator starts to fall with the acceleration same as the acceleration due to gravity.

Further Explanation:

The bathroom scale kept in an elevator shows the weight of the person standing on the scale. The weight of a person is the measure of the force experienced by the person due to the acceleration due to gravity of Earth.

Since the scale is kept in an elevator, the reading of the scale is affected by the acceleration of the elevator as it exerts a pseudo force on the person standing on the scale in opposite direction.

If the cables holding the elevator are broken suddenly, the elevators starts to fall will the acceleration due to gravity and the person on the scale experiences weightlessness inside the elevator as the pseudo force acting in the opposite direction is equal to his weight. Therefore, the bathroom scale will give the reading zero as the cable of the elevator breaks.

The driver of a 1500 kg car, travelling on a highway, hits the brakes. A force of 12000 N stops the car in a distance of 64 m. h
nekit [7.7K]

Answer:

v = 32 m/s

Explanation:

As per work energy theorem we know that work done by all the forces must be equal to change in kinetic energy of the car

So here when brakes are applied then work is done by the brakes which is equal to change in kinetic energy of the car

so we know that work done by the brakes is given as

W = -12000 \times 64

W = -768000 J

now we will have

W = 0 - \frac{1}{2}mv^2

-768000 = - \frac{1}{2}(1500) v^2

v = 32 m/s

A tourist stands at the top of the Grand Canyon, holding a rock, overlooking the valley below. Find the final velocity, and disp
uranmaximum [27]

Answer:

a. Vf = 39.24 [m/s]

b. Vf = 31.24 [m/s]

c. Vf = 47.24 [m/s].

Explanation:

To solve this problem we can use the following equation of kinematics. We have to keep in mind that the gravitational acceleration acts downwards, therefore when the rock falls towards the abyss it has the same direction of the acceleration and that is why the gravitational acceleration has a positive sign in the equation.

v_{f}=v_{o}+g*t

where:

Vf = final velocity [m/s]

Vo = initial velocity = 0 (when the rock is dropped)

g = gravitational acceleration = 9.81 [m/s²]

t = time = 4 [s]

a.

v_{f}=0+9.81*4\\v_{f}= 39.24 [m/s]

b.

In this particular situation, the acceleration will be taken as negative because the gravity is pointing in the opposite direction of the movement of the rock.

v_{f}=8-(9.81*4)\\v_{f}=-31.24[m/s]

The negative sign in the answer tells us that the rock no longer moves up instead it does downwards when 4 seconds have passed.

c.

v_{f}=8+(9.81*4)\\v_{f}=47.24[m/s]
