A uniform drawbridge must be held at a 37 ∘ angle above the horizontal to allow ships to pass underneath. the drawbridge weighs

45,000 n and is 14.0 m long. a cable is connected 3.5 m from the hinge where the bridge pivots (measured along the bridge) and pulls horizontally on the bridge to hold it in place. part a what is the tension in the cable?

Answer:

T = 119638 N

Explanation:

Since the drawbridge is at equilibrium and not moving at the given situation

so we can apply torque balance in this case

so here torque due to weight is counterbalanced by the torque due to tension in the string

Torque due to weight is given as

\tau_1 = mg(\frac{L}{2}cos37)

torque due to tension in string

\tau_2 = T(3.5 sin37)

now by torque balance equation we have

T(3.5sin37) = mg(\frac{L}{2}cos37)

T(2.1) = 45000(7)(0.8)

T = 119638 N

Tension may be defined as the pulling power transferred axially through a cable, string, chain, or alike one-dimensional unceasing object, or by separately end of a rod.

To compute for tension:

Sum the moments about the pivot:

ΣM = 0 = T * 3.5m * sin37 º - 45000N * 7.0m * cos37º
tension T = 119 434 N

Josh is designing a lab to separate a mixture of sulfur powder and iron filings. He looks at all the ways to separate a mixture
Stolb23 [73]

Answer:

D) magnetic attraction

Explanation:

Mixture consists of sulfur powder and iron filings . The former is non magnetic and the later is magnetic material . The best way to separate them is to use a magnet . This method is called magnetic separation method . A magnet will attract the iron filling but the sulfur will remain un-attracted . Thus, the two will get separated from each other.

The burner on an electric stove has a power output of 2.0 kW. A 710 g stainless steel tea kettle is filled with 20∘C water and p
asambeis [7]

Answer:

The volume of water that was in the kettle is  1170 cm^{3}

Explanation:

Given:

Power, P = 2.0 kW = 2000 W, Mass of stainless steel, m_{s} = 710 g = 0.71 kg at temperature of  20^{0} C

Part A:

If it takes time, t = 3.5 minutes to reach boiling point of water 100^{0} C, then from conservation of energy,

Total energy supplied by the burner = Total heat gained by the water and the stainless steel to rise from 20^{0} C to 100^{0} C

i.e. Pt = m_{s}c_{s}(100 - 20 ) + m_{w}c_{w}(100 - 20 )

m_{w} = \frac{pt - 80m_{s} C_{s} }{80c_{w} } = \frac{2000*3.5*60 - 80*0.71* 450}{80*4200}

m_{w} = 1.17 kg

where c_{w} = 4200 J/Kgk (specific heat capacity of water), c_{s} = 450 J/Kgk (specific heat capacity of steel)

But volume of water in the the kettle, v = \frac{mass}{density} = \frac{1.17}{1000}= 1.17 *10^{-3} m^{3}

∴ v = 1170 cm^{3}
