Answer: Denisty = 2.0 g/mL

Density =\frac{Mass}{volume}

The mass of the matchbox is, m = 10 g

The volume of the cylinder = volume of water displaced in the cylinder when matchbox is immersed = final volume - initial volume.

V=v_f-v_i=46 mL-41 mL=5.0 mL

Density =\frac{Mass}{volume}=\frac{10g}{5mL}=2.0g/mL

Hence, the density of matchbox is 2.0 g/mL

Density formula is:
D = m / V
Volume of the matchbox car:
V = 46 ml - 41 ml = 5 ml = 0.005 l = 0.005 dm³
D = 10 g / 0.005 dm³
D = 2000 g / dm³ = 2 kg / dm³ = 2 × 10 ^(-3) kg/m³

Identify the pros and cons of using mirrors versus lenses in each of the following applications:
disa [49]

Answer:

Explanation:

A lens – An object, usually made of glass, that focuses or defocuses the light that passes through it.

A mirror – A smooth surface, usually made of glass with reflective material painted on the underside, that reflects light so as to give an image of what is in front of it.

Telescope – monocular optical instrument possessing magnification for observing distant objects, especially in astronomy.

Refracting telescopes – are telescopes that use lenses are and those that use concave parabolic mirrors are called reflecting telescopes.

Pros of mirror telescope

• They are easier to construct and not expensive to produce

• made larger and more durable (more light can be directed to the eyepiece which is good)

• cannot have any occlusions

• mirrors have less spherical aberration

• reflect all wavelengths of light equally

• more magnification power for cheaper version

Cons of mirror prisms

• it must also be realigned after cleaning, which can be expensive - maintenance disadvantage

• Reflective Surface Disadvantage

Pros of Lenses telescope

• Easy to use

• More reliable

Cons of Lens telescope

• are not easy to construct and expensive to produce

• May have occlusions

• spherical aberration are more

• Doesnt reflect wavelengths of light equally they bend light differently

• Less magnification power for cheaper version

• heavy

• Longer body

Pro of Mirror periscope

• it helps us to see further than our view that is what is above us or sometimes even below us.

•Light weight

disadvantage:

• it may not work properly and show distorted images due to fog. ; Some have a narrow field of view ; May be detected by others Ungainly (long, takes up space),

•Not as rugged as prisms.

• Maintenance of reflection surface

Pros of Prism periscopes

• incorporated lenses for magnification and function as telescopes.

• They typically employ prisms and total internal reflection instead of mirrors, because prisms, which do not require coatings on the reflecting surface, are much more rugged than mirrors.

• May be fitted with additional optical capabilities such as range-finding and targeting.

Cons.

•mechanically disadvantage: Complex optically ; Some have a narrow field of view ; May be detected by others

Ungainly (long, takes up space)

• Heavy weight

Lens - Terrestrial telescope

Pro: An advantage is that it makes it possible to vary the magnification of the telescope.

Cons- This system has the disadvantage increasing the length of the telescope.

Mirror- Terrestrial telescope (Cassegrain)

Pro: Good for distant terrestrial viewing.

greater magnification is attained.

They are more shorter

Cons- It is not what people expect a telescope to look like.

Slight light loss due to secondary mirror obstruction compared to refractors. Generally not suited for most terrestrial applications nor for to view objects in the sky.

How does an increase in thermal energy affect the state of matter?
shusha [124]

Answer:

When thermal energy is added to a substance, its temperature increases, which can change its state from solid to liquid (melting), liquid to gas (vaporization), or solid to gas (sublimation). ... When the pressure exerted on a substance increases, it can cause the substance to condense.

Compared to the thickness and density of the continental crust of South America, the oceanic crust of the Pacific floor is______
chubhunter [2.5K]

Answer:

The pacific floor (oceanic crust) is thinner and more denser

Explanation:

The continental crust have a thickness of about 35 to 40 km on an average, and are composed of rocks that has less denser granitic minerals such as feldspar, quartz.

On the other hand, the oceanic crust have a thickness of about 7 to 10 km on an average, and it is comprised of denser mafic rocks that contains high amount of olivine and pyroxene minerals.

Due to this, the oceanic crust subducts below the continental crust during the time of collision.

Thus, the pacific floor (oceanic crust) is thinner and more denser, in comparison to the South American continental crust.

In an Atwood machine the two masses (m1 =5.0kg and m2 = 3.0 kg) are released from rest, with m1 at a height of h=0.75 m above th
masya89 [10]

Answer:

Explanation:

m₁ is heavy so it will go down and m₂ will go up. Let common acceleration be a .

For downward acceleration of m₁

m₁g - T₁ = m₁a

For upward acceleration of m₂

T₂- m₂g = m₂a

adding

m₁g - T₁ +T₂- m₂g = (m₁+m₂)a

m₁g- m₂g  +(T₂- T₁) = (m₁+m₂)a  --------------- ( 1 )

For rotatory motion of disc of mass mp and moment of inertia I

(T₁ -T₂ )R = I α , α is angular acceleration ----------( 2 )

From  1 and 2

m₁g- m₂g -  I α / R = (m₁+m₂)a

m₁g- m₂g -  I a / R² = (m₁+m₂)a

m₁g- m₂g = (m₁+m₂)a + I a / R²

m₁g- m₂g = [(m₁+m₂) + mp k² / R² ] a   ( k is radius of gyration of disk )

a = (m₁- m₂)g / [(m₁+m₂) +mp k² / R² ]

=  (m₁- m₂)g / [(m₁+m₂) + .5 mp  ]  ( for cylinder k² / R² = .5 )

If h be the height by which m₁ falls and its velocity becomes v

v² = 2 a h

a = v² / 2h

v² / 2h = (m₁- m₂)g / [(m₁+m₂) + .5 mp  ]

v²[(m₁+m₂) + .5 mp  ] = 2(m₁- m₂) gh

- v²[(m₁+m₂) +2(m₁- m₂) gh =  .5 mp v²

- v²[(m₁+m₂) +2(m₁- m₂) gh / .5 v ² = mp .

- 1.8² ( 5 + 3 ) + 2 ( 5 - 3 ) 9.8 x .75 / .5 x 1.8² = mp

- 25.92 + 29.4 / 1.62 = mp

2.15 kg = mp .

K.E  of masses = 1/2 x 5 x 1.8² + 1/2 x 3 x 1.8²

= 12.96 J

Rotational KE of disc

= 1/2 I ω²

= 1/4 mp r²ω²

= 1/4 x mp x v²

= .25 x 2.15 x 1.8²

= 1.74 J

in percent terms

(1.74 / 12.96) x 100

= 13.5 %
