The key to most "how do I separate." questions is solubility.

The trick is to add a liquid that will only dissolve one substance but not another.

Let's say you had a beaker full of sand, table salt (NaCl), and acetanilide. Is there anything you can add that would only dissolve one of these three substances?

Yes, there is! Acetanilide like most organic compounds, isn't soluble in water. But salt is soluble in water. So to the mixture, I would add water, and then pass the water through a filter. The filter paper will "catch" the sand and acetanilide, but the table salt will remain dissolved in the water. If you then let that water evaporate (either via boiling or under vacuum), you will recover your salt.

So now, how to do you separate the sand from the acetanilide? Sand isn't really soluble in anything, but acetanilide is soluble in organic solvents, such as ethanol. So to the mixture of sand and acetanilide, add ethanol, and pass it through a filter. The sand will once again get stuck in the filter paper, and your acetanilide will be dissolved in ethanol. Remove the ethanol (via vacuum, or rotovap) and you will be left with acetanilide.

What is the most appropriate unit of astronomical distance to represent the distance between an earth an orbiting space station
Reil [10]
Astronauts use "Astronomical Unit" to measure the distance between planets in our solar system "only". To measure long distances like between 2 galaxies, they use "light years". One Astronomical Unit = Average distance between sun and earth which is equal to 149.6 million kilometers. Ping me if you have any doubt.

How many milliliters of 0.100 m naoh are required to neutralize 9.00 ml of 0.0500 m hcl?
BabaBlast [244]
V ( NaOH ) = mL ?

M ( NaOH ) = 0.100 M

V ( HCl ) = 9.00 mL / 1000 => 0.009 L

M ( HCl ) = 0.0500 M

number of moles HCl:

n = M x V

n = 0.009 x 0.0500 => 0.00045 moles HCl

mole ratio:

HCl + NaOH = NaCl + H2O

1 mole HCl ---------------- 1 mole NaOH
0.00045 moles HCl ----- ??

0.00045 x 1 / 1 => 0.00045 moles of NaOH

M = n / V

0.100 = 0.00045 / V

V = 0.00045 / 0.100

V = 0.0045 L

1 L ------------ 1000 mL
0.0045 L ----- ??

0.0045 x 1000 / 1 => 4.5 mL of NaOH

If a sample of gas is located 10.2 cm from the injection point and the chart speed is 0.5 cm/min, what is the retention time?
Archy [21]

Answer : The retention time is, 20 min

Explanation :

Retention time : It is defined as the amount of time a compound spends on the column after it has been injected.

Formula of retention time is:

\text{Retention time}=\frac{\text{Distance from injection point to center of peaks}}{\text{Chart recorded speed}}

Given:

Distance from injection point to center of peaks = 10 cm

Chart recorded speed = 0.5 cm/min

Now put all the given values in the above formula, we get:

\text{Retention time}=\frac{10cm}{0.5cm/min}

Retention time = 20 min

Thus, the retention time is, 20 min

highlight why it is important to evaluate important assessment studies before any development could be made on the environment
Kay [80]

Answer:

Essentially, an EIA is designed to identify the potential risks of a project (e.g., infrastructure development such as a dam) to environmental and human well-being and identify measures to eliminate and/or mitigate these risks. This can be done by replacing and/or modifying planned activities to reduce impacts
