There are three sets of sketches below, showing the same pure molecular compound (hydrogen chloride, molecular formula ) at thre

e different temperatures. The sketches are drawn as if a sample of hydrogen chloride were under a microscope so powerful that individual atoms could be seen. Only one sketch in each set is correct. Use the slider to choose the correct sketch in each set. You may need the following information: melting point of : -114.8 boiling point of : -85.1

Answer:

The correct answer is - option C.

Explanation:

Given: the melting point of HCl is

-114.8 °C, which suggests that below this temperature HCl will be solid.

and, since the boiling point of HCl is - 85.1 °C. It is also suggested that above this temperature HCl will be gas, Therefore.

Solid -114.8 - Ordered arrangement

Liquid -85.1c - Less orderly arranged

Gaseous - Least orderly arranged

Thus, at —90 °C, HCl will be present 'in the liquid state, At — 1 °C, HCl will be present in the gaseous state and at -129 °C, HCl will be present in the solid-state. So, the molecules will be organized in a more orderly manner .

Thus, the correct answer is - option C

It is thought that Vitamin C might be an effective preventative
Anon25 [30]

Answer:

IF the fruit juice contains a high level of vitamin C, THEN the preventative effectiveness against common cold increases.

Explanation:

The hypothesis is a testable explanation of a scientific investigation. It aims at predicting the outcome of the experiment. One feature of the hypothesis is that it must be testable. The hypothesis is usually written in an "IF, THEN" format.

This question is regarding an experiment to test the amount of vitamin C in fruit juice. The vitamin C is thought to be an effective preventative against common cold. Hence, the hypothesis connects the effect on common cold (dependent variable) with the amount of vitamin C (independent variable). The hypothesis can be written as:

IF the fruit juice contains a high level of vitamin C, THEN the preventative effectiveness against common cold increases.

What are the primary products of burning a fossil fuel?
denis23 [38]
Several important pollutants are produced by fossil fuel combustion: carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and hydrocarbons. In addition, total suspended particulates contribute to air pollution, and nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons can combine in the atmosphere to form tropospheric ozone, the major constituent of smog.

Carbon monoxide is a gas formed as a by-product during the incomplete combustion of all fossil fuels. Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause headaches and place additional stress on people with heart disease. Cars and trucks are the primary source of carbon monoxide emissions.

Two oxides of nitrogen--nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide--are formed in combustion. Nitrogen oxides appear as yellowish-brown clouds over many city skylines. They can irritate the lungs, cause bronchitis and pneumonia, and decrease resistance to respiratory infections. They also lead to the formation of smog. The transportation sector is responsible for close to half of the US emissions of nitrogen oxides; power plants produce most of the rest.

Sulfur oxides are produced by the oxidization of the available sulfur in a fuel. Utilities that use coal to generate electricity produce two-thirds of the nation's sulfur dioxide emissions. Nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides are important constituents of acid rain. These gases combine with water vapor in clouds to form sulfuric and nitric acids, which become part of rain and snow. As the acids accumulate, lakes and rivers become too acidic for plant and animal life. Acid rain also affects crops and buildings.

Hydrocarbons are a broad class of pollutants made up of hundreds of specific compounds containing carbon and hydrogen. The simplest hydrocarbon, methane, does not readily react with nitrogen oxides to form smog, but most other hydrocarbons do. Hydrocarbons are emitted from human-made sources such as auto and truck exhaust, evaporation of gasoline and solvents, and petroleum refining.

The white haze that can be seen over many cities is tropospheric ozone, or smog. This gas is not emitted directly into the air; rather, it is formed when ozone precursors mainly nonmethane hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides react in the presence of heat and sunlight. Human exposure to ozone can produce shortness of breath and, over time, permanent lung damage. Research shows that ozone may be harmful at levels even lower than the current federal air standard. In addition, it can reduce crop yields.

Finally, fossil fuel use also produces particulates, including dust, soot, smoke, and other suspended matter, which are respiratory irritants. In addition, particulates may contribute to acid rain formation.

Also, water and land pollution.

Use the periodic table to choose the element that matches each description.
nika2105 [10]

Using the periodic table to choose the element that matches each description include the following below:

 • Halogen: iodine
 • Group IIA: magnesium
 • Nonreactive: argon
 • Alkali metal: potassium.

What is a Periodic table?

This contains elements which are arranged according to the order of their atomic number in a tabular form. There are 18 groups which are the vertical columns present while there are 8 periods which are the horizontal rows present in the periodic table.

Example of an alkali metal is potassium while the non reactive ones include argon, neon etc. Examples of halogens include chlorine, iodine etc. are the ones which have seven electrons in their outer electron shells thereby just requiring one electron to achieve to obtain a stable octet configuration.

These are therefore the elements which match the descriptions provided in this case and is the most appropriate choice.

How many electrons would be transferred in either a voltaic or electrolytic cell that uses the following half reactions
omeli [17]

Answer:

Numbers of electrons transferred in the electrolytic or voltaic cell is 6 electrons.

Explanation:

Fe^{3+} (aq) + 3 e^-\rightarrow Fe (s) ,E^o = -0.036 V

Mg^{2+}(aq) + 2 e^- \rightarrow Mg (s),E^o = -2.37 V

The substance having highest positive reduction E^o potential will always get reduced and will undergo reduction reaction.

Reduction : cathode

Fe^{3+} (aq) + 3 e^-\rightarrow Fe (s) ,E^o = -0.036 V..[1]

Oxidation: anode

Mg(s)\rightarrow Mg^{2+}(aq) + 2 e^-,E^o = 2.37 V..[2]

Oxidation reaction occurs at anode and reduction reaction occurs at cathode.

To calculate the E^o_{cell} of the reaction, we use the equation:

E^o_{cell}=E^o_{red,cathode}-E^o_{red,anode}

E^o_{cell}=-0.036V-(-2.37 V)=2.334 V

The overall reaction will be:

2 × [1] + 3 × [2] :

2Fe^{3+} (aq) + 3Mg(s)+6e^-\rightarrow 2Fe (s)+3Mg^{2+}(aq)+6e^-

Electrons on both sides will get cancelled :

2Fe^{3+} (aq) + 3Mg(s)\rightarrow 2Fe (s)+3Mg^{2+}(aq)

Numbers of electrons transferred in the electrolytic or voltaic cell is 6 electrons.
