Explanation:

Take two litmus paper, dip one litmus paper in one beaker and dip the other litmus paper in the second beaker. And wait to observe the color change that takes place. Litmus paper turns red in acidic solution or when the pH is below 7.0 and turns purple when the pH is neutral or is equal to 7.0. So for the beaker that contains 1.0 HCl the dipped litmus paper should turn red and or the beaker that contains water the dipped litmus paper should turn purple.

The experimenter must keep in mind to never add water to acid but acid to water. However to find out whether one is acid and the other os water ,the experimenter can test by just taking one of the two beakers and pour it a little to the other beaker and if that beaker to which you pour it breaks and smoke appears then you are pouring water to acid but if there is just a bit of change in colour (white) then you are pouring acid to water
