Answer:

A. the intermolecular forces are similar in both dichloromethane and iodine.

Explanation:

Solubility is determined by the principle , "like dissolves like" .

i.e. , if a compound is polar then it will dissolve in a polar compound only , and

if a compound is non - polar then it will dissolve in a non - polar compound only .

As,

Non polar compounds , have similar interaction , and hence gets dissolved , and similarly ,

polar compounds have similar dipole - dipole interaction , and hence gets dissolved .

From the question ,

Iodine, I₂(s), is more soluble in dichloromethane, CH₂Cl₂(l) , as both are non - polar in nature and hence due to similar interaction , are soluble .

Water is polar in nature and therefore less soluble in Iodine, I₂(s) .

Which of these events is caused by contact forces?
harkovskaia [24]

Earthquakes along the San Andreas fault in California.

<u>Explanation</u>:

  • When the two plates collide with each other, earthquakes occur. The contact between them makes this earthquake possible. The contact forces are responsible for the earthquakes as there is contact between two plates.
  • The gravitational force is a force that is responsible for elevated tides happening on the east coast or the Jupiter's moons to remain in orbit. But this is not a contact force as there is no contact between them
  • Moreover, Without any contact, the magnetic force is a non-contact as it attracts the pins from a distance.

Each isotope has a unique half-life. The half-life of an isotope is the time taken for half of the starting quantity to decay (w
Tems11 [23]

Answer:

b. 17,190

Explanation:

Using the formula for C-14 dating,

t=\dfrac{ln(\dfrac{N}{N_0})t_\frac{1}{2}  }{-0.693}

where Present Value N =1/8 of Parent Sample

Initial Value, N_0=1

Half Life, t_\frac{1}{2}=5730 years

t=\dfrac{ln(\dfrac{1/8}{1})5730}{-0.693}

=17,190

Therefore the fossil is about 17190 years old.

Ethanol (c2h5oh) melts at -114°c. the enthalpy of fusion is 5.02 kj/mol. the specific heats of solid and liquid ethanol are 0.9
Nimfa-mama [501]

Answer: 4.18925 kJ heat is needed to convert 25.0 g of solid ethanol at -135 °C to liquid ethanol at -50°C.

Explanation:

Temperature of Solid C_2H_5OH=-135^oC=138 K(0^oC=273K)

Melting temperature of Solid C_2H_5OH=114^oC=159 K

Temperature of liquid C_2H_5OH=-50^oC=223K

Specific heats of solid  ethanol = 0.97 J/gK

Specific heats of liquid ethanol = 2.3 J/gK

Heat required to melt the the 25 g solid C_2H_5OH at 159 K

\Delta T_1 = 159 K - 138 K = 21 K

Q_1=mc\Delta T= 25\times 0.97J/gK\times 21 K=509.25 J

Heat required to melt and raise the temperature of C_2H_5OH upto 223 K

\Delta T_2 = 223 K - 159 K  = 64 K

Q_2=mc\Delta T= 25\times 2.3J/gK\times 64 K=3680 J

Total heat to convert solid ethanol to liquid ethanol at given temperature :

Q_1+Q_2=509.25 J+3680 J=4189.25 J=4.18925 kJ (1kJ=1000J)

Hence, 4.18925 kJ of heat will be required to convert 25.0 g of solid ethanol at -135 °C to liquid ethanol at -50°C.
