The eye spots on the wings mimic the eyes of a different animal. Because of this, whatever is threatening the moth could think the moth is too large to eat, a different animal that the predator doesn't eat, or even the predator's own predator. In the end, the animal threatening the moth would think the moth was a different animal and probably leave it alone, preserving the moth's life.
