A galvanic (voltaic) cell consists of an electrode composed of zinc in a 1.0 M zinc ion solution and another electrode composed

of silver in a 1.0 M silver ion solution, connected by a salt bridge. Calculate the standard potential for this cell at 25 °C . Refer to the list of standard reduction potentials.

Answer:

The E°cell for the galvanic cell is 1.56 V.

Explanation:

A galvanic cell is a device that uses redox reactions to convert chemical energy into electrical energy. The chemical reaction used is always spontaneous.

Oxide-reduction reactions, also called redox, involve the transfer or transfer of electrons between two or more chemical species. In these reactions two substances interact: the reducing agent and the oxidizing agent.

The gain of electrons is called reduction and the loss of electrons oxidation. That is to say, there is oxidation whenever an atom or group of atoms loses electrons (or increases its positive charges) and in the reduction an atom or group of atoms gains electrons, increasing its negative charges or decreasing the positive ones.

The species that supplies electrons is the reducing agent (that is, it is that species that oxidizes, yielding electrons and increasing its positive charge, or decreasing the negative one causing the reduction of the other species) and the one that gains them is the oxidizing agent ( that is, it is that species that is reduced, capturing electrons and increasing its negative charge, or decreasing its positive charge, causing oxidation of the other species).

The galvanic cell works as follows: In the anodic half-cell oxidations occur, while in the cathodic half-cell reductions occur. The anode electrode, conducts the electrons that are released in the oxidation reaction, to the metallic conductors. These electrical conductors conduct the electrons and carry them to the cathode electrode; the electrons thus enter the cathode half-cell and the reduction takes place in it.

To determine the oxidizing and reducing agent you must first know the reduction potentials. For this you consult the list of standard reduction potentials. In this list you can see that the semi-reactions that occur with their corresponding potentials are:

Ag⁺ + e⁻ ⇒ Ag E°= 0.80 V

Zn²⁺ + 2 e⁻ ⇒ Zn E° -0.76 V

The species that has the greatest potential for reduction will be the species that will be reduced, that is, it will be the oxidizing agent. In this case, it will be the experience corresponding to silver (Ag). Therefore, to obtain the redox reaction, the half-reaction corresponding to zinc (Zn) must be reversed to be an oxidation, keeping its E ° value constant. Then:

Reduction: Ag⁺ + e⁻ ⇒ Ag E°= 0.80 V

Oxidation: Zn ⇒ Zn²⁺ + 2 e⁻ E° -0.76 V

So: E°cell=Ereduction - Eoxidation

Or what is the same E°cell=Ecathode - Eanode because the reduction always occurs in the cathode and oxidation in the anode.

E°cell=0.80 V - (-0.76) V

E°cell= 1.56 V

Then the E°cell for the galvanic cell is 1.56 V.

Write a balanced half-reaction for the product that forms at each electrode in the aqueous electrolysis of the following salts:(
Semmy [17]

The balanced half-reaction for the product that forms at anode is Fe⁺² + 2e⁻ → Fe(s) and 2H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂ + 2OH⁻, the product that forms at cathode is 2I⁻ → I₂ + 2e- and 2H₂O → O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻

What is Balanced Chemical Equation ?

The equation during which the number of atoms on the reactant side is equal to the number of atoms on the product side in an equation is called balanced chemical equation.

Now write the equation for FeI₂

At cathode:

Fe⁺² + 2e⁻ → Fe(s) Eo = - 0.44 V

2H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂ + 2OH⁻ Eo = - 0.827 V

It is easy to decrease Fe⁺² ions than the water, the product which is formed at cathode is Iron.

At anode:

2I⁻ → I₂ + 2e- Eo = - 0.54 V

2H₂O → O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ Eo = -1.23 V

O₂ gas formed at anode.

Thus from the above conclusion we can say that The balanced half-reaction for the product at anode is Fe⁺² + 2e⁻ → Fe(s) and 2H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂ + 2OH⁻, the product that forms at cathode is 2I⁻ → I₂ + 2e- and 2H₂O → O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻.

Which equation obeys the law of conservation of mass? A. 2C4H10 + 2Cl2 + 12O2 7CO2 + CCl4 + 10H2O B. C4H10+ Cl2 + 2O2 7CO2 + CCl
Reptile [31]

Answer : The correct option is A.

Explanation :

Law of conservation of mass : In the chemical reaction, the mass of reactant must be equal to the mass of product.

A. 2C_4H_{10}+2Cl_2+12O_2\rightarrow 7CO_2+CCl_4+10H_2O

The mass of reactant side = 2C_4H_{10}+2Cl_2+12O_2=[8(12)+20(1)]+4(35.5)+24(16)=642g

The mass of product side = 7CO_2+CCl_4+10H_2O=7(12)+14(16)+12+4(35.5)+20(1)+10(16)=642g

This means, the mass of product is equal to the mass of reactant. The mass remains conserved and obeys the law of conservation of mass.

The reaction B, C, D, E does not obey the law of conservation of mass.

Therefore, Only reaction A obey the law of conservation of mass.

Which of the following are accurate descriptions of closed and open thermodynamic processes? open processes are 'flow through' p
Shalnov [3]

Answer: Option (a) is the correct answer.

Explanation:

According to thermodynamics, a closed system is defined as the system in which there will be no exchange of matter takes place but there will be exchange of energy between the system and surrounding.

On the other hand, an open system is defined as the system in which there will be exchange of both matter and energy takes place between system and surrounding.

Hence, we can conclude that out of the given options accurate descriptions of closed and open thermodynamic processes is that open processes are 'flow through' processes.

timama [110]

Answer:

The advantage of the compound light microscope over the dissecting microscope is the magnification power of the telescope. Compound light microscope magnifies from 40x up to 1,000x while dissecting microscope magnifies up to 40 x only. In this regard, more magnification power is advantageous to view smaller objects.
