4. Without consulting Appendix 3 in the textbook, predict whether the entropy change is positive or negative for each of the fol

lowing reactions. Give reasons for your predictions. (12 points) a. 2KClO4(s) → 2KClO3(s) + O2(g) b. H2O(g) → H2O(l) c. 2Na(s) + 2H2O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + H2(g) d. N2(g) → 2N(g)

Answer:

For a: The entropy change is positive.

For b: The entropy change is negative.

For c: The entropy change is positive.

For d: The entropy change is positive.

Explanation:

Entropy change is defined as the change in the measure of randomness in the reaction. It is represented as (\Delta S). Randomness of gaseous particles is more than that of liquid which is further more than that of solids.

In a chemical reaction, if the solid reactant is getting converted to liquid or gas or even aqueous state (ions are getting formed), then the entropy change is positive.

If the case is reverse, then the entropy change is taken as negative.

For the given options:

Option a: 2KClO_4(s)\rightarrow 2KClO_3(s)+O_2(g)

As, the solid reactant is getting converted into gaseous product. Thus, the randomness will increase and hence, the entropy change is positive.

Option b: H_2O(g)\rightarrow H_2O(l)

As, the gaseous reactant is getting converted into liquid product. Thus, the randomness will decrease and hence, the entropy change is negative.

Option c: 2Na(s)+2H_2O(l)\rightarrow 2NaOH(aq.)+H_2(g)

As, the solid and liquid reactants are getting converted into gaseous and aqueous products. Thus, the randomness will increase and hence, the entropy change is positive.

Option d: N_2(g)\rightarrow 2N(g)

As, nitrogen molecule is getting converted to two nitrogen atoms. So, the number of atoms are getting increases which increases the randomness of the system. Hence, the entropy change is positive.

Two proteins interact to form a multimeric complex. When one of the proteins is mutated, there is a substantial loss of function
ololo11 [35]

Answer:

4. dominant negative

Explanation:

Mutation is the process in which sudden changes take place within the sequence of amino acids that causes different type of problems. On the basis of nature and conditions mutation can be classified as dominant negative, neomorphic and some others types. Dominant mutation is also called as antimorphic mutation and changes the functions of the molecules that are proteins.

Why can't polyatomic ions ever stand alone?
Basile [38]
The prefix "poly-" means "many," and "atomic" refers to atoms, so a polyatomic ion is made of 2+ atoms covalently bonded together. These ions are charged, which is why they can never stand alone.
