Thomas wants to make a box with no lid out of cardboard sheet to use as a food dish for his dog. He plans to make the box shape

by cutting four congruent squares from all corners of the sheet.
1.) Thomas buys a cardboard sheet that is 12 by 8 inches. Create an equation for this situation, find the zeros, and sketch the function.
2.) What is the size of the cutout he needs to make so that he can fit the maximum amount of food in the box?
3.) If Thomas wants a volume of 12 cubic inches, what size does the cutout need to be? What would be the dimensions of this box?
4.) Using complete sentences, explain the connection between the cutout and the volume of the box.
5.) Design an equation that would work for any cardboard sheet length, q, and width, p.

1. V = x (12 - 2x) (8 - 2x)
The zeros are 0, 6, and 4

2. dV/dx = x(12 - 2x)(-2) + (8 - 2x)(12-4x) = 0
x = 4.9

3. If V = 12 = x (12 - 2x) (8 - 2x)
x = 0.13, 3.65, 6.22

4. If we increase the dimensions of the cutout until 4.9, the volume will also increase, after that, the volume will decrease.

5. V = x (q - 2x) (p - 2x)

Systems by graphing
Levart [38]

Answer:

A system of linear equations contains two or more equations to solve a problem. We graph both equations in the same coordinate system. The solution to the system will be in the point where the two lines intersect.

What is the area of the triangle?
ArbitrLikvidat [17]

9514 1404 393

Answer:

 7 square units

Step-by-step explanation:

There are several ways the area of triangle EBD can be found.

 • find the lengths EB, BD, DE and use Heron's formula (messy due to roots of roots being involved).
 • define point G at the lower left corner and subtract the areas of ∆DEG and BCD from trapezoid BCGE.
 • figure the area from the coordinates of the vertices.
 • use Pick's theorem and count the dots.

We choose the latter.

__

Pick's theorem says the area of a polygon can be found as ...

 A = i + b/2 -1

where i is the number of grid intersection points interior to the polygon, b is the number of grid points intersected by the border.

The attached figure shows the lines EB, BD, and DE intersect one point in addition to the vertices. So, b=4. A count of the red dots reveals 6 interior points (i=6). So, the area is ...

 A = 6 + (4/2) -1 = 7

The area of ∆EBD is 7 square units.

The four powers have zero (0) in common

Indices

From the question, we are to determine what the four powers have in common

In the question, we can observe that the four powers have 0 in common.

The value of each of the expressions is 1.

Hence, the four powers have zero (0) in common.
